Former Chelsea defender, William Gallas, has warned the club’s board, under the leadership of Todd Boehly, against signing Argentina World Cup star, Enzo Fernandez, from Benfica.
Gallas believes Chelsea is taking a huge risk in making a club record bid to sign Fernandez this January transfer window, warning the midfielder is still to ‘prove himself.’
Reports in Portugal earlier suggested that Chelsea has offered Benfica £79 million plus winger Hakim Ziyech and two other players on loan to try and get the deal for Fernandez done.
“The question is if Enzo is the right price,” Gallas told Genting Casino.
“What he did in the World Cup for his age was brilliant, that is why he was voted the best young player in the tournament.
“I didn’t know he was so young. He played as if he had won a World Cup before and played with a lot of personalities.
“So it is very good to see a player like him. Even if he is a world champion. I don’t know if he’s worth that value.”
“For me, I don’t have a problem with the price of the players. I just have a problem with the price of the players who have not proved themselves. Every player can have one great season.”
He added, “You can’t put a price of £120million on one player like this, and you don’t know if he’s going to have a good season in the Premier League because it’s a different league.
“Chelsea has to be careful. I think they’ve made a mistake like this already, and it is a huge risk.”
