President of the Association Of Residents Doctors, FCTA, George Ebong, has said that the only way a revolution can happen in Nigeria’s public health facilities is when government officials begin to use local hospitals.
Recalls that in 2019, the House of Representatives rejected a bill seeking to regulate medical trips abroad by public officials.
The proposed law could not pass its third reading.
While debating the report on the bill which was seeking an Act to regulate medical tourism by public officials and strengthening the local health facilities, several lawmakers were of the opinion that the legislation would breach the rights of public officials.
However, appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, Doctor Ebong said having public officials in the local hospitals was the only way out.
Asked how the revolution could begin, he said, ”If we are ready to fix the health care system in this country, I would think every government official should use the government hospitals.
I would want to see the ministers use Wuse General Hospital. I would love to see the Senate President use the Maitama hospital.”
Recall that former President Muhammadu Buhari embarked on several medical trips.
His successor, President Bola Tinubu, has also continued the same way.
