Flood: FG urges communities to be on alert

The federal government will on Thursday unveil the 2025 flood outlook to the public, including the potential high-risk areas this year as the rainy season sets in.

The Director General of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, would unveil the forecasts which include expected flood patterns and potential high-risk areas.

Mohammed said the forecast is aimed at helping stakeholders and communities to prepare for, and mitigate the impact of flooding in the country.

He said the annual flood outlook is an essential tool used to inform and prepare stakeholders and communities in Nigeria for impending flood risks.

The NIHSA boss said the theme of this year’s unveiling is ‘Flood resilience: Focusing on communities’ preparedness and adaptive strategies for flood management’.

“The 2025 AFO will highlight anticipated flood scenarios with a focus on flood preparedness, early warning systems, and community-level adaptation strategies.

“The annual flood outlook provides data-driven, scientifically backed and evidence-based information that supports proactive planning and response across sectors,” he added.
