The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has mulled a plan to appoint Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol, following the recent controversy over his conduct at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday.
Keyamo stated that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had agreed to reduce KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month and would collaborate with the musician to promote awareness of acceptable conduct within the aviation space.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria will lead the engagement process.
”The NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.
”Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the police,” the statement read.
The minister added that the decision followed appeals from well-meaning individuals, as well as KWAM 1’s public show of penitence over the August 5 incident in which he allegedly obstructed a ValueJet aircraft’s movement.
Keyamo also revealed that the NCAA would withdraw its criminal complaints against the artiste.
Recall that on August 5, legendary musician KWAM 1 got into a dispute on a ValueJet flight in Abuja after a flight attendant suspected his flask contained alcohol, which is banned on planes in Nigeria.
He insisted it was doctor-prescribed medication, but things got heated and he reportedly spilled the contents on airline staff. The next day, a video of him trying to stop the plane from taking off went viral.
FAAN claimed the flask contained alcohol, while the NCAA suspended two pilots over the incident. KWAM 1 later said the whole story was blown out of proportion, insisting the flask had only water from the airport lounge and that he followed all rules.
The NCAA eventually blacklisted him from flying, and he later apologized, promising to remain a good ambassador for Nigeria
