FCT authority alerts of imminent floods

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has alerted residents of the FCT of imminent heavy floods in Abuja.

FEMA asked emergency workers to be ready to save lives and property in the nation’s capital.

Director-General Abbas Idriss issued a statement on Thursday through the Head of Public Affairs Nkechi Isa.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) High Impact-Based Forecast predicts heavy rainfall in the FCT on Thursday and Friday.

The forecast said there would be flash floods on roads and low lying settlements, disruption of traffic and reduction of visibility.

Also expected are strong winds accompanying the rains may likely damage mud houses or weak structures.

Idriss appealed to the people residing in such structures to relocate to safer places.

He advised restraint through disconnection of electrical appliances, avoidance of parking under trees and driving through waters.

The agency urged members of the public to dial the 112 emergency toll free number in the event of an emergency.
