The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has dragged the Senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Dino Melaye before an Abuja Federal High Court over his alleged illegal possession of firearms.

In a charge filed against Melaye, the police claimed that a pump-action gun was recovered from lawmaker’s residence in Kogi State in July 2018 during a search of the property.

The police, in the charge sheet marked FHC/ABJ/CR/07/2019, said the offence contravened Section 27 of the Firearms Act.

The charge sheet read: “That you, Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West district in the 8th National Assembly, on or about the 20th day of July 2018, at about 12.30 hours under the jurisdiction of this honourable court, unlawfully had in your possession one automatic pump-action shotgun and 20 cartridges, which were recovered at your residence located in the Ayetoro Gbede area of Kogi State, when a search warrant was executed on the directives of the Nigeria Police Force at your above mentioned residence under your control and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27(1)(a)(i) of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.”

The police also provided eight witnesses to attest to the charges which comprise six policemen and two men who were painting Melaye’s house when the policemen came to search the property.

The witnesses include: DSP Babagana Bukar, DSP Ibrahim Abalaka, ASP Abdullahi Musa, Inspector Atabo Okpanachi, Inspector Apeh Peter, Theophilus Nuhu, Matthew Anthony and ASP Mohammed Onu.

In his statement, Nuhu, who is a painter, reportedly said: “On July 24, 2018, my master, Peter, brought one Matthew Anthony and myself from Kaduna State to Kogi for painting work in which he took us to one Senator Dino Melaye’s house at Ayetoro, Gbede area of Kogi State.

“While we were doing the painting, policemen, comprising MOPOL, SARS and SCID, came in and met us in the compound and they told me they wanted to conduct a search in the compound and they started to search the compound.

“Within and around the boys’ quarters building, where some cars were parked, under the flower, a gun was observed there with many bullets, but I do not know who put the gun there.”

Obasanjo lacks dignity – Sagay

Published

Itse Sagay

Itse Sagay

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Prof Itse Sagay (SAN), has criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo for attacking President Muhammadu Buhari.

Sagay, in a seven-page response titled ‘Obasanjo and the Power Withdrawal Syndrome,’ on Tuesday slammed Obasanjo’s “boisterous, aggressive and hectoring attitude towards succeeding presidents”.

He said with Obasanjo’s “meddlesomeness, rude and uncouth attitude towards later heads of state,” it was clear that he was addicted to “a substance called power”.

Sagay added, “The status of an ex-president is one of quiet dignity, respect, discretion, decorum, discipline and restraint. Obasanjo does not have a single one of these qualities. We have had a number of former heads of state, namely, (Yakubu) Gowon, (Shehu) Shagari, (Ibrahim) Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar and (Goodluck) Jonathan.

“These former heads of state have exercised discretion, restraint and self-discipline in relation to their successors, but not Obasanjo. Gowon was Obasanjo’s boss from 1966 to 1975 (nine years). Not once did Gowon utter a public criticism of Obasanjo throughout his tenure from 1976 to 1979 and 1999 to 2007.

“The same thing applies to Abdulsalami Abubakar, who handed over power to Obasanjo in 1999. Not a single word of public excoriation against Obasanjo was uttered by Abdulsalami Abubakar throughout Obasanjo’s eight years in power. Abubakar demonstrated only decorum and self-respect.”

Presidential candidate of the PDP and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar acknowledging cheers from the mammoth crowd

The Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar says the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reversed all the benefits recorded by the PDP including the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which now grows at two percent instead of six percent.

Atiku made the submission on Tuesday during PDP South East Presidential Zonal Rally in Owerri Imo State.

Addressing a gathering of party supporters, Atiku promised to engage the youths through quality jobs. He advised them against the fake promises of the APC, describing the party as an evil party. He urged them to vote and ensure they defend their votes.

Atiku told the teeming youth who filled the stadium to capacity despite the fact that the State governor is of APC, they will either get employment or business.

Hear him, “We have promised jobs for our young men and women. You either have an employment or business. We will help you set up your businesses. We pledge that we are going to restructure this country. APC is not going to do it.

“Therefore, don’t vote APC. It is an evil party. Since Nigeria’s existence, we have never seen so many young men and women that are unemployed. They have turned this country into the headquarters of poverty in the world.

“They have destroyed our economy. When PDP was in government, we were growing at six percent. Today, we are less than two percent and our population is growing at three percent. Now our people are poor. This is what APC has brought to us.

“We have promised to restore the economy, to get the economy growing again so that there would be prosperity, jobs for all of you” he pledged

Also in his remarks, the Director General of PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Senator Bukola Saraki said that hye rally is a clear signal that the entire South East has locked down their votes for Atiku.

He said, “This is a rally that is sending a big signal that the entire Southeast, the entire Nigeria is ready for a new president. They are ready for a new President that sabi the work, they are ready for a president that will create jobs for the youths.

“He is ready to lead Nigeria because he has the capacity. He has reserved 40% for you youths. This man will create jobs, he will take care of the youths and he will unite Nigeria.”

Also speaking, the National Chairman of the Party, Prince Uche Secondus stressed that the election is about incompetent and competence, energy and weakness, capacity and incapacity, asking the people to ensure PDP is voted in at all levels.

Highlights of the event was the presentation of PDP governorship flags to the party’s candidates in the five South East states of Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States.

Dignitaries at the rally are: Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu; Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi; his counterpart in Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu; Imo PDP governorship candidate, Emeka Ihedioha; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, serving and former National Assembly members from the zone, among others.

Your war on corruption is a charade until you prosecute all APC leaders, PDP tells Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) charges President Muhammadu Buhari to go beyond the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal and former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and prosecute other leaders of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), who have been openly indicted of corruption.

The party says that singling out Babachir Lawal and Ayodele Oke, for prosecution, while providing official cover to numerous other indicted APC leaders and persons close to him, President Buhari has further confirmed that he is indeed partisan and insincere in prosecuting the anti-corruption fight.

The party in a statement by its Spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan pointed out that the fact Vice President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed that Mr. President had to give his nod before Babachir and Oke could be prosecuted, goes to further confirm that President Buhari has annexed the system and directly determines who is prosecuted and who is spared.

The PDP therefore challenges President Buhari to immediately order the prosecution of all APC leaders, particularly members of his Presidential Campaign Council, beginning with the APC factional National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, the campaign Director-General, Rotimi Amaechi, other directors and zonal coordinators, who have allegations of corruption hanging on their necks.

“Mr. President should also immediately order the prosecution of the former aide to the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, Mr. Baba Inna, who was arrested in September last year, over accusations of receiving N2.5 billion from politicians, businessmen and women on behalf of the First Lady.

“In the same vein, he should also order the prosecution of Mrs. Amina Mohammed, who while being paraded by the Department of State Services (DSS), last year stated in public that persons close to President Buhari were involved in serial fraud and looting of public resources under the official cover of the Buhari Presidency.

“President Buhari should also order an open inquest into alleged involvement of some individuals said to be close to the Buhari Presidency in the N1.032 trillion alleged corrupt acquisitions in 9Mobile and Keystone Bank PLC.

“He is also invited to order an investigation into allegations that persons close to him and serving in his Presidency took N500 million as bribe to reduce the fine imposed on a telecommunication company operating in the country, from N1.03 trillion to N330 billion.

“Furthermore, we challenge President Buhari to allow an inquest into the N14 trillion looted oil money under his watch, as detailed in the NNPC leaked memo; the handling of the repatriated $322m that has been siphoned under the guise of sharing to the poor; the N33 billion Internally Displace Persons (IDP) intervention fund and the billions of naira already frittered through the ‘Tradermoni scheme’. ”

PDP insists that until Mr. President musters the required political will to carry out these actions, his war against corruption remains a charade.
