Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has ended his glittering football career.

Drogba, now 40 years old, decided to hang his boots after his team, Phoenix Rising, which he part-owned lost to Louisville City in the USL Cup final.

It was the final of U.S. football’s second tier.

According to BBC Sport, co-owner of Rising, Berke Bakay thanked Drogba for his “amazing contributions to the beautiful sport” after Friday’s loss.

Drogba scored a goal in each of the club’s three play-off matches en route to their first ever USL Cup final.

“You have laid the foundation of something really special that we are all going to enjoy for many years to come,” tweeted Bakay.

Before the final, Bakay told BBC World Service that Drogba would be moving into the boardroom after retires.

Writing on the Phoenix Rising website last month, Drogba had said: “I joke with people that they need to give me the cup, so I can retire in peace. And that if I don’t get it, I’ll come back. But the truth is, this is my last season.”

Drogba scored 157 goals in 341 appearances during his first spell at Chelsea from 2004 to 2012, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League.

Following moves to Shanghai Shenhua in China and Turkish side Galatasaray, where he won the Super Lig and Turkish Cup, Drogba returned to the Blues for the 2014-15 season, scoring seven goals in 40 appearances and helping Jose Mourinho’s side to the title.

He then had 18 months with Montreal Impact before joining the Phoenix.

He scored 65 goals in 104 appearances for the Ivory Coast and was named African Footballer of the Year twice.

Drogba’s stats:

1x Champions League

4x Premier League

4x FA Cup

3x League Cup

2x Community Shield

2x PL Golden Boot

1x Süper Lig

1x Turkish Cup

2x African POTY

OFFICIAL: Manchester United appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as interim manager

The Norwegian coach has been installed as the club’s new temporary boss until the end of the current season following Jose Mourinho’s sacking

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as Manchester United’s interim manager for the rest of the season.

The former Red Devils striker, who played at Old Trafford for over a decade between 1996 and 2007, takes over on a temporary basis in the wake of Jose Mourinho’s exit on Tuesday.

A United statement read: “Manchester United announced today that former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the 2018-19 season.

“Solskjaer will take charge of the first team with immediate effect and will remain in place while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new full-time manager.”

He arrives from Norwegian side Molde, having returned to the club for a second stint back in 2015. Mike Phelan has also returned to United in the role of first-team coach, and will work alongside the club’s former midfielder Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Solskjaer, whose appointment had been accidentally revealed late on Tuesday , told United’s official website : “Manchester United is in my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”

United’s executive vice chairman Ed Woodward added: “Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles. His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”

A forward perhaps best known as a “super sub” for United, Solskjaer famously came off the bench against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final to score an injury-time winner and hand Sir Alex Ferguson’s side their first European honour for over 30 years.

He also picked up six Premier League titles and two FA Cups, among other honours, during his time as a player at the club.

At international level, he won 67 caps for Norway and was a member of their 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship squads, reaching the last 16 in the former.

Following his retirement, Solskjaer transitioned from the United playing squad to the managerial set-up, where he took charge of the reserves at Carrington under Ferguson between 2008 and 2011.

He left the club to take the reins at Molde, where he had played before switching to United, and won the Tippeligaen league title in his first season in charge, in 2011.

He was coaxed back to the United Kingdom in early 2014 to replace Malky Mackay as manager of relegation-threatened Cardiff City but was unable to prevent the club from making the drop back into the Championship.

A subsequent dismissal followed after a run of poor results to open the 2014-15 campaign and Solskjaer was reappointed Molde boss the following October on a three-and-a-half year deal.

I never expected to have so much success, Messi says

FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi on Tuesday said he never expected to have such a successful career after receiving his fifth Golden Shoe in Barcelona.

The award was for his being the top goalscorer in Europe last season.

The forward scored 34 times in La Liga last season to claim his fifth Golden Shoe award, which is one more than Juventus’s Cristiano Ronaldo has won.

Messi pipped Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to the prize after the Egyptian netted 32 times in the English Premier League.

“When I started playing I did not expect all this. My dream was, obviously, to be a professional, but I didn’t imagine so much,” Messi said at a gala.

“This is thanks to hard work and effort and, above all, my team mates. I have the best players in the world in their positions playing beside me and that makes everything easier and lets me win these prizes.”

Messi, who also earned the Golden Shoe in 2009/2010, 2011/2012, 2012/2013 and 2016/2017, led FC Barcelona to a league and cup domestic double last season.

The forward leads La Liga’s top scorers chart with 14 goals in this campaign, more than any other player in the top five European leagues.

Ed Woodward reveals why Man United sacked Mourinho

Manchester United executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward has revealed why the club sacked manager, Jose Mourinho.

Recall that Mourinho was on Tuesday morning sacked by United.

According to Metro UK, Woodward told United’s players at Old Trafford training ground shortly after Mourinho’s sack that one of the reasons the club fired the Portuguese gaffer was because of the Red Devils’ current position on the Premier League table.

The report claimed that Woodward also said that Mourinho’s relationship with some of United’s most high profile players was another reason why the former Chelsea coach was sacked, adding that United board could not continue under the circumstances.

The report also claimed that the United boss did not only put the whole blame on the 55-year-old.

Man United will tackle Cardiff City on Saturday in the Premier League fixture at home.
