A 22-year-old bus conductor, Olajide Oyenuga, who allegedly burgled his neighbour’s house with an intent to steal, was on Friday brought before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused, of no fixed address is facing a two-count charge of burglary and entering residence with intent to commit felony.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the accused had on Jan. 6, at 8 p.m. burgled his neighbour’s apartment at No. 7, Duru Close in Shomolu area of Lagos.

Oriabure alleged that the accused had entered the apartment of the complainant, Mr Abayomi Odunmada, through the roof of the house.

According to him, the neighbours heard the sound of the roof collapsing and called the attention of the security guard to it.

He further said that it was the guard who reported the burglary to the police.

The offences contravene Sections 307 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sections 307 and 308 both stipulate seven-year jail term each for the offences.

In her ruling, Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with one responsible surety in like sum.

Ojuromi said the surety should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Feb. 19 for mention.

The Kasuwan Nama Upper Area Court, Jos, on Tuesday sentenced a 28-year-old student, Shamsudeen Suleiman, to one-year imprisonment for house breaking and N1.1million theft.

The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, said the punishment would serve as deterrent to those who may contemplate committing crime.

Mohammed also ordered the convict to pay back N650, 000 to the complainant as restitution, adding that the court was lenient in its judgment because the convict was a first offender.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Abubakar Musa, told the court that a case of theft was reported on Dec. 19 2018, at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Plateau Command, by one Junaidu Ibrahim.

Musa said that the convict, a resident of Nassarawa Gwon , broke into the house of the complainant and took a box containing N1.1million.

On his arraignment, Suleiman pleaded guilty to the two- count charge which the prosecutor said contravened Sections 287 and 254 of the Penal Code.

Man lynched in Ekiti for allegedly consuming human feaces

Man Lynched Ekiti Allegedly Consuming Human Feaces

A yet to be identified man, believed to be in his 30s, has been lynched by a mob in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital for allegedly harvesting human feaces from Matthew Street neighbourhood in the town.

The incident had caused confusion in the state capital as people in various parts of the town had reported that the suspect was being led round parts of the state capital, including Okeyinmi, Matthew Street, Ijigbo and others, before taking him to Odo Ado, where he was lynched.

Some other witnesses at the scene where the man they said was suspected to be a ritualist was lynched, however, claimed that he was killed allegedly for consuming the feaces.

When newsmen arrived at the scene, the victim had been partly burnt and was lying dead on the street, in a part of Odo Ado, called Red Roof Junction.

People at the area claimed that the man had earlier been paraded in parts of the state capital, including the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe.

Sources claimed that the man was sighted by an unidentified elderly woman, who raised the alarm which prompted youths of the area to arrest him.

They stripped him naked and while beating him, the sources added, the victim sought help by mentioning some clergymen he claimed to know in the town.

The mob had followed him to a white garment church at the Odo Ado Area, but when they couldn’t get the clergyman the victim had named, at home, he allegedly took to his heels but the pursuing mob caught up with him at the Red Roof Junction.

The mob had pulled down the roof of the church and destroyed its property, including all they found at an adjoining room the neighbours had described as “the church office.”

None of the witnesses at the neighbourhood could identify the victim, with all of them directing newsmen to Matthew Street, saying “that’s where the thing started.”

The witnesses at the Red Roof had dispersed when newsmen arrived at the area, refusing to speak and claiming they could be victims of police raid when the security agents arrive to investigate the incident.

All the witnesses could give as reason for the killing was “they said he as gathering feaces into a bag at Matthew area, and they said it was an elderly woman that spotted him and raised the alarm.”

The witnesses further claimed that the man was lynched on the suspicion that he was a ritualist.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State police command, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu, could not be reached for his comments on the incident as his telephone handset is switched off.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Odo Ado said he was not at the office and had not been briefed of the incident, saying “we are currently busy where the Vice President is having an event.”

Published

on

The Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that about four people died while eight others were seriously injured in a fatal auto crash along Bauchi Dass road Saturday

The Deputy Commandant FRSC Bauchi Command, Mr. Paul Goar told DAILY POST in Bauchi that the accident occurred after the tyre of a Sharon car exploded and had a head on-collision with a Hilux van heading to Dass

“We were alerted immediately by good Samaritans when the accident occurred for rescue and we took the survivors to the hospital for quick medical attention while the corpses were deposited at ATBU Teaching Hospital mortuary,” said Goar.

He warned that FRSC will no longer condone the use of second hand tyre in the country.

“The accident would have been avoided if the drivers had utilised FRSC awareness campaign against the use of fake tyres,” added Goar

He cautioned that henceforth, the commission will deal decisively with erring road users for using fake spare tyres and spare parts.
