Banex Plaza Reopens Following Military Standoff

The Nigerian Military has reportedly reopened the popular Banex Plaza, an electronics and telecommunications market in Wuse II, Abuja, after laying siege on the plaza since Saturday, May 18, 2024.

A shop owner in the nearby Emab Plaza, confirmed to our correspondent, that the plaza was opened a couple of hours ago, as of the time of filing this report, adding that the shop owners were currently holding a general meeting.

“Yes, they have reopened. They are having a meeting now; all the shop owners are having a meeting, but I don’t know if they are meeting with the military. They opened the plaza this afternoon, around 2 pm,” Somto said.

Report explains that the popular market was sealed by the Military on the 18th of May, following attacks on some officers of the army, in a viral video shared on X on the same day.

A buyer had reportedly gone with the soldiers to demand a refund from a shop owner from whom he bought a phone, which then became faulty.

The Nigerian Army had also detained a shop owner, Caleb Onyemaechi, at the Mambilla Barracks, Asokoro, Abuja, over the clash, and also arrested some people whom they claimed were involved in the assault.
