Akwa Ibom governor Umo Eno sacks all commissioners and special advisers

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has sacked all members of his cabinent which include commissioners and spcial advisers.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Eno Uwah, on Friday.

“All Honourable Commissioners and Special Adviser are hereby advised to hand over to their Permanent Secretaries or the most Senior Director where there is no permanent secretary,” Uwah said in the release.

He added that the governor expressed his sincere appreciation to the outgoing Executive Council members for their dedicated service to the state.

The governor was also said to have wished them well in their future endeavour and thanked them for their contributions to the development of Akwa Ibom State.

Meanwhile, speaking during the Valedictory Exco meeting held at Government House, Uyo Eno regretted that the Commissioners were not sacked because of non performance adding that they had to end their season to pave way for beginning of another season in his administration.

…for me, if you were to be changed based on non-performance, I think none of the Commissioners would go.

“All of you have delivered and that’s why the Arise Agenda has succeeded.

“But we must come to the end of a season, start another season and keep moving.”

This comes days after Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, similarly dissolved the state executive council comprising his commissioners and sacked Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barrister Muhammad Aliyu-Ubamdoma.

The announcement came during a special emergency meeting at the Government House in Lafia on January 3, 2024.

Mohammed Iliyasu-Idde, permanent secretary for cabinet affairs and special services announced the development .

The statement explained that “All the outgoing council members are to hand over the affairs of their ministries and government property in their possession to the permanent secretaries in their respective ministries while the SSG is to hand over to the permanent secretary cabinet affairs and special services.”

This change comes after the governor had nominated 17 commissioner-nominees to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in July 2023 for screening and confirmation.

It’s worth noting that Sule had made similar changes in 2021, citing “the need for a more effective and efficient governance structure.”
