The Adamawa State House of Assembly (ADHA) has passed a bill mandating drug use tests for job seekers, politicians seeking elective offices, people seeking driving and other licenses, and intending couples.
The bill stipulates that all politicians seeking elective offices or being offered political positions must be subjected to rigorous drug or other substances tests around Adamawa State.
The mandatory drug test also concerns intending couples, traditional rulers, title holders and applicants seeking admission into various institutions of learning.
The legislation also subjects union leaders, sportsmen and women, any other government worker, drivers, tricycle operators and job seekers to drug testing before consideration for employment, appointment or issuance of a driving license.
For politicians aspiring or appointed for various political offices as well as students, the mandatory drug integrity test would form part of screening exercises.
The bill is sponsored by erstwhile Speaker, Kabiru Mijinyawa (APC, Yola South constituency).
After the passage of the bill, the Speaker of the Assembly, Iya Abbas directed the Clerk to prepare a clean copy for the assent of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
