Abia Assembly kicks over proliferation of unapproved scrap dump sites

Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution mandating the state government through the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry, Ministries of Environment and Homeland Security to go against the siting of scrap dump sites in the state without the government’s approval.

This followed a motion on the need for immediate intervention by the state government on the activities and menace of scrap dealers, brought before the House by the member representing Ugwunagbo State Constituency, Mr Chijioke Uruakpa and supported by other members.

Uruakpa prayed the House and the state government to carefully look into the activities of the scrap dealers and possibly prosecute erring individuals in the business.

Granting the prayers by Uruakpa, Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa said the House would come up with a legislation that would guide the operations of scrap dealers in the State so as to mitigate the negative effects on Abia residents.

It was gathered that the action of the Abia State House was in response to the increasing number of scrap dump sites sprouting in several parts of the State, especially in some streets of the commercial city of Aba and Umuahia, the state capital.

The House also passed for first reading a bill for a law for the establishment of a college of nursing sciences and other related purposes.
