Bagudu: Navigating Renewed Hope for Nigeria’s Sustainable Development

By Jamilu Magaji

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks his second anniversary in office, his administration’s Renewed Hope agenda continues to gain global traction through strategic international engagements, with the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, playing a pivotal role in projecting Nigeria’s vision for sustainable economic transformation.

Over the past week, Sen. Bagudu alongside Mr. Wale Edun – the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, has been a prominent figure at two high-level global gatherings: the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, and the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) in Khankhendi, Azerbaijan. Representing President Tinubu at these forums, Bagudu’s engagements emphasized Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic vigour, climate commitment, and economic reform drive under the Renewed Hope Maestro. Having closely monitored the visit, let me highlight a few success stories therefrom.

1. Forging Global Partnerships in Spain

At the Financing for Development Conference in Seville, Bagudu participated  in strategic bilateral and multilateral meetings, engaging with top global economic leaders. The delegation held discussions with the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed on global economic trends and Nigeria’s fiscal strategies. He also engaged with Chairman of the OECD, Mr. Carsten Staur, exploring development financing, tax reforms, and cooperation on transparency; Executive Director of IATI, Ms. Yemesrach Workie, on deepening Nigeria’s transparency in aid and development finance as well as President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina. Bagudu highlighted Nigeria’s development priorities, regional infrastructure, and climate financing.

These engagements align with Tinubu’s push to rebrand Nigeria as a responsible and credible investment destination, leveraging international cooperation to unlock growth.

2. Driving Climate Leadership in Azerbaijan

The ECO Summit in Khankhendi was another significant takeaway. Representing President Tinubu, Bagudu delivered a thoughtful speech advocating for a just and inclusive energy transition and climate-resilient development. Tinubu’s address, read by Bagudu, echoed urgent calls for: cleaner energy access through regional cooperation and technical partnerships. The President equally harped on investment in green industrialisation, climate adaptation, and mitigation; strengthening the ECO-Africa Trade Corridor to foster economic connectivity as well empowering rural communities, youth, and women through inclusive growth policies.

There is no gain saying that Bagudu’s leadership at the Summit visibly amplified Nigeria’s voice in global climate diplomacy. His presence at high-level meetings including bilateral sessions with Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, Mikayil Jabbarov, and Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister, Rashid Meredov — reflected Nigeria’s pursuit of strategic alliances for trade, energy, and diplomatic expansion.

Remarkably, Turkmenistan formally requested to establish diplomatic ties with Nigeria during the Summit, a testament to the Minister’s effective diplomatic outreach.

3. Symbolism Amidst Second Anniversary of Tinubu Administration

It is noteworthy that that these international engagements coincide with the midpoint of President Tinubu’s first term, making them both symbolically and substantively significant. Similarly, Bagudu’s active role in articulating and implementing the Renewed Hope vision on global platforms speaks to the administration’s growing focus on policy continuity, global integration, and long-term development planning.

Notably, he announced that Nigeria is in the process of finalising the National Development Plan (NDP) 2026–2030, which will succeed the current 2021–2025 plan. This successor strategy is designed to align with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and embed climate change resilience, green economy initiatives, and inclusive economic growth at its core.

4. Soft Diplomacy and Cultural Engagement

Beyond policy meetings, Senator Bagudu also engaged in soft diplomacy, attending the Victory Show of Karabakh Horses in Aghdam alongside several heads of state. This cultural engagement underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering goodwill and solidarity with global partners beyond conventional diplomacy.

5. Renewed Hope Agenda in Action

Through Senator Bagudu’s engagements, the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope agenda is being demonstrated not just in domestic reforms but on the global stage. Key themes of the agenda; economic transformation, inclusive growth, climate responsibility, and strategic international partnerships were consistently reinforced. This particular outing reflects a government that is not passive but active in shaping its development trajectory. As Nigeria seeks to lead West Africa’s economic resurgence and drive sustainable development, the Minister’s efforts embody a proactive foreign economic policy deeply aligned with the vision of Mr. President.

In a nutshell, Bagudu’s strategic diplomacy and high-level representation mark a significant stride in actualising the Renewed Hope promise. His work in Seville and Khankhendi offers a compelling snapshot of how Nigeria, under President Tinubu, is not merely reacting to global trends but positioning itself as a co-architect of a fairer, greener, and more inclusive international order.

As Nigeria navigates its third year under the Tinubu administration, the groundwork being laid abroad by key actors like Bagudu could prove instrumental in delivering real dividends of hope at home.
