Cyber crime rising in Yobe – Police

The Yobe State Police Command has raised concern over the growing incidence of cybercrime and other internet-related offences across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas.

This was disclosed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, at a one-day Cybersecurity Symposium themed “Contemporary Challenges and Solutions.”

The event was organised by the Office of the Honorary Special Adviser on Policy Delivery to the Yobe State Government in collaboration with the Office of the State Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technology.

SP Abdulkarim stated that the command recorded six cybercrime cases within the past five months, many of which targeted the reputation of individuals.

“Over the past year, we have dealt with numerous cases involving cybercrime. Many of these attacks are directed at tarnishing the images of political figures, businesspeople, and other individuals,” he said.

“Currently, several of these cases are in court, and the trend shows cybercrime is becoming widespread in Yobe.”

He urged social media users to activate two-factor authentication as a safeguard against hackers and online criminals.
