The governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule has called on leaders from the Northern region of Nigeria to desist from using Almajiri as a good to settle political scores.
Sule said this while speaking at the flag-off ceremony of the regional conference on population dynamics, security, climate change, out-of-school children/Almajiri, and vulnerable children in Nigeria.
According to Sule, who is the chairman of the Northern Central Governors’ Forum, regional leaders must collectively seek an end to the Almajiri system.
He also described the system as a ticking time bomb that could have serious consequences on the nation if not checked.
He said, “The Almajiri problem is indeed a huge problem for us. I think, just as I told my colleagues in Kaduna during our last meeting of the Northern governors, I said we should stop complaining. It is time for us to take the bull by the horns and see how we can resolve the problem by ourselves.”
He also urged the leaders to brace up the challenge of solving the problem rather than waiting for anyone to liberate the region from the shackles created by the Almajiri system.
He added, ‘’Why should Northern Nigeria continue to hold the entire nation ransom when we know that it is our own problem and we have to go out there and find a way to solve it.”
