Terrorists suspected to be members of the notorious terror group, Lakurawa, have launched a series of deadly attacks on the village of Gueza in Dioundiou, Niger state killing at least seven people.
According to Zagazola Makama, a renowned Lake Chad Basin counter-terrorism and insurgency expert, the attacks were carried out in two separate incidents, just days apart.
In the first attack, five villagers were brutally strangled to death by the militants, leaving the community in a state of panic and fear.
The attackers returned shortly after, killing the village chief’s representative and a local father in an act of vengeance reportedly tied to a personal dispute. Makama explained that the violence was sparked by a Lakurawa leader’s pursuit of a local woman, which was met with resistance from the village chief’s representative and the woman’s father.
The situation took a deadly turn when the Lakurawa leader’s advances were rebuffed, and the woman was sent away to live with relatives. Angered by the action, the militants retaliated, resulting in the deaths of two more villagers.
Lakurawa is a new terrorist group which has ravaged parts of Kebbi and Sokoto States. The group can be traced to Burna Faso and Mali.
