Tragedy struck at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) headquarters in Abuja October 26 when a man, identified only as Denis, reportedly died during an attempt to install an elevator. Initial reports suggest that Denis, who was contracted informally, may not have possessed the requisite professional certification or skills to perform the job.

According to eyewitnesses, the project was awarded to a non elevator company, bypassing qualified, certified elevator installation companies. This incident has drawn attention to ongoing safety and procurement procedures in the elevator industry, underscoring the risks of relying on untrained or uncertified personnel in critical tasks.

In recent years, such unfortunate events have highlighted the need for regulatory frameworks in Nigeria’s elevator installation and maintenance sector. Safety advocates and industry stakeholders have called on lawmakers to accelerate the passage of a comprehensive Elevator Safety Bill. A representative for the local elevator technicians’ association emphasized that these incidents illustrate the severe risks involved when unlicensed individuals undertake technical work. “We urgently need regulatory oversight to prevent quacks from jeopardizing lives,” the spokesperson said.
