Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved the payment of N70,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state.
The payment is scheduled to take effect from October 2024.
This development was announced by Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu during a press briefing, following Monday’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Otti.
According to Kanu, the state government is committed to enhancing workers’ welfare, and payment of the new minimum wage will commence within days.
“The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence,” Kanu stated.
He added, “If the governor wants to deviate from the national standard and pay higher, so be it.”
The development was confirmed by Commissioner for Labour and Productivity Sunny Onwuma.
