Imo Assembly elects Olemgbe, 40, new speaker

The Imo State House of Assembly has elected 40-year-old Chike Olemgbe as its new speaker.

At the inauguration of the 10th State House of Assembly in Owerri, the state capital, Olemgbe, a first-time member representing the Ihitte/Uboma Local Government Area, was elected without opposition.

Olemgbe was Ihitte/Uboma LGA’s recent chairman of the Transition Committee.

Vitalis Azodo, the member-elect for Ideato South, moved the motion to nominate Olemgbe as the next speaker, and Ugochukwu Obodo, the member-elect for Owerri Municipal Council, seconded it.

After no other nominations were made, the clerk of the House, Chinelo Emeghara, called for Olemgbe to be sworn in.

Amara Iwuanyanwu, the assembly’s recent Deputy Speaker, was re-elected without opposition.

He was sworn in as the state’s second-ranking lawmaker right away.

The new speaker pledged in his speech to collaborate with the executive branch to bring the benefits of democracy to the citizens of the state.
