The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, on Friday condemned calls in some quarters for the installation of an interim government in Nigeria.
Sani Yabagi, the IPAC National Chairman, condemned the calls during a news press conference held after the council’s emergency general meeting in Abuja.
Yabagi insisted that the statement by the Department of State Service (DSS) that it had discovered a plan by some persons to violently disrupt Nigeria’s peace and install an interim government was disturbing.
The Chairman described the interim government as unacceptable, undemocratic and unconstitutional.
Yabagi said, “It’s an attempt to overheat the polity, cause confusion, political upheavals, impasse and quagmire as was the case in the infamous annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election that necessitated the hasty set up of an interim government by General Ibrahim Babangida, which was headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan in August 1993.
“The court declared it illegal, and the interim national government was overthrown by General Sani Abacha in Nov. same year.”
Recall that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, recently challenged the DSS to apprehend plotters of a possible interim national government.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced Sen. Bola Tinubu as the winner of the Feb. 25 presidential poll ahead of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party’s Mr Peter Obi.
However, following INEC’s declaration, both Atiku and Obi rejected the results alleging that the presidential poll was rigged.
With the legal battles ahead, there have been speculations of an interim government in the country.
