Peace group in Taraba condemns attack on political convoys

The Taraba Independent Peace Committee has condemned the reported attacks on the convoy of some political parties in Takum and Wukari local government councils of the state.

They expressed sadness that despite the recent peace accord signed by no fewer than fourteen governorship candidates in the state, some candidate supporters continue igniting problems.

The Committee through its Chairman, Professor Talla Ngarka, at a media parley on Tuesday, urged the political actors to play the game according to the rules.

Campaign convoys of some House of Assembly candidates were said to have been recently attacked in both Wukari and Takum local government councils of the state by political thugs.

Frowning at the act, the Committee said it was disturbed by the new development coming days to the election

“the committee is in receipt of the reports of attacks on the convoy of some political parties in Wukari and Takum Local government areas and we are disturbed by these developments, which are coming in a few days to the election.”

The Committee also identified Donga, Yorro, Gassol and Jalingo local government councils among areas where political thugs have continued to have a field day in.

They said, “there are also threats of violence in Donga, Wukari, Takum, Yorro, Gassol and Jalingo Local Government Areas according to reports from independent monitors working with Initiative for Community and Human Development (ICHD) in Taraba.”

The group tasked critical stakeholders and the governorship candidates to thread extra legitimate miles to wade into the disturbances to avoid future occurrences.

“We want to appeal to all the governorship candidates, party chairpersons, political stakeholders, religious and traditional rulers to prevail on their supporters, followers and subjects to give peace a chance before, during and after the election.”

The group stressed that the committee and the Kukah Centre Secretariat of the National Peace Committee were not law enforcement agencies but were committed to a peaceful society, it said it would stop at nothing to share intelligence with relevant security agencies regarding threats linked to politicians and political parties.
