Forest, who were looking for their first League Cup final appearance since 1992, gave a strong account of themselves, but failed to make the most of several promising attacks.
Bruno Fernandes extended United’s lead in the 89th minute of the match.
The return leg will be played at Old Trafford next week and is looking like a formality for Erik ten Hag’s men.
