World Teachers’ Day: Jigawa NUT demands more allowances

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Jigawa State branch has asked the State Government to introduce an allowance for classroom teachers that are teaching in hard-to-reach areas.

NUT State Chairman, Comrade Yunusa Abdulkadir stated this while briefing newsmen to commemorate World Teachers’ Day, in Dutse.

He explained that lack of teachers was the main problem affecting the sector in Jigawa State and across the country.

Yunusa said there is about a 30,000-teacher gap in Jigawa State.

According to him “the present administration has increased the number of schools from 1982 to over 3400, recruited over 1900 teachers, and engaged 4500 J-teach teachers to address the problem.”

He urged the State and the local governments to embark on massive recruitment of teachers to address the problem for effective service delivery.

The Chairman, however, commended Governor Badaru Abubakar for the prompt payment of salaries of teachers, promotions, teachers’ training and provision of learning materials.

He also urged teachers to reciprocate the Government’s efforts by committing themselves to the discharge of their responsibilities.
