2027: Nigerian Govt vows to prosecute anyone tampering with citizens’ data

‎The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, NDPC, has vowed to prosecute anyone found tampering with people’s data ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‎The National Commissioner of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, issued the warning on Saturday when he appeared as a guest in an interview on Channels Television.

‎The warning came against the backdrop of concerns over data privacy and the safety of voter information in the country.

‎Olatunji cautioned that the commission is intensifying action to monitor how personal data is being handled by political actors and institutions, especially as election activities gradually begin to gather momentum.

‎According to him, at a time when political parties and other groups are collecting large volumes of voter-related data, the protection of citizens’ personal information becomes a serious national concern.

‎“They are collecting data of their party members. What kind of privacy safeguards, what kind of guardrails they have that they put in place.

‎“They don’t even know. That’s the truth. Anyone found revealing people’s data will be prosecuted,” he said.
