The Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour (NACTAL) has called on students in Kogi State to take an active role in combating child trafficking, abuse, and exploitation by reporting suspicious cases to the appropriate authorities.
The State Coordinator of NACTAL, Mrs. Rachael Remilekun Akande, made the call on Tuesday during a sensitization programme held at UEC Secondary School, Old Poly Quarters, Lokoja, as part of activities marking World Sickle Cell Day.
Speaking to the students, Mrs. Akande stressed the importance of vigilance and community involvement in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse.
She urged students to speak up whenever they witness cases of child maltreatment, trafficking, forced labour, or prostitution.
“If you are staying with a neighbour and discover that a child is being maltreated or forced into prostitution, ensure you report the matter to the appropriate authority. Call our attention to any form of abuse or maltreatment,” she said.
Mrs. Akande assured the students that NACTAL maintains strict confidentiality for individuals who report cases, noting that whistleblowers would be protected from victimization.
“When you see something, say something. When you report to us, we hide your identity to protect you from any harm,” she added.
According to her, child trafficking and child labour remain major threats to the wellbeing and development of children, emphasizing that prompt reporting by students, teachers, parents, and community members can help authorities rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
She also commended the management of UEC Secondary School for providing a platform to educate students on child protection and other social issues.
The awareness campaign was organized by a coalition of Civil Society Organizations, including the Child Protection Network (CPN), NACTAL, and the Uyo Joy Lifeline Foundation. The programme also featured presentations on sickle cell disease prevention and personal hygiene.
The Principal of UEC Secondary School, Mr. Sunday Ojodale Jibrin, who attended the event, pledged the school’s continued support for initiatives aimed at protecting children and promoting their welfare.
Mrs. Akande expressed appreciation to the school management for the opportunity to engage with the students and raise awareness on the dangers of child trafficking and abuse.
