The Niger State Government has clarified comments made by the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Barrister Maurice Magaji, regarding the recent bandit attack on Pissa Community in Borgu Local Government Area, stating that his remarks were misinterpreted in some media reports.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, the government acknowledged that the community was attacked by armed bandits, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property.
The government described the incident as unfortunate and extended its condolences to the families of the victims and the affected community.
According to the statement, the comments attributed to the Homeland Security Commissioner were not intended to deny the occurrence of the attack but were aimed at assuring the public that the security situation had been brought under control following swift intervention by security agencies.
The government explained that security operatives, working in collaboration with local authorities and community stakeholders, responded promptly to contain the attack, prevent further casualties and stop the spread of criminal activities to neighbouring communities.
It added that normalcy has since returned to the area, while security presence has been strengthened to prevent further attacks.
The statement further noted that surveillance and intelligence-led operations are ongoing across vulnerable communities in the state as part of efforts to enhance security and protect residents.
Reaffirming the state’s commitment to tackling insecurity, Magaji stressed that the Niger State Government remains determined to confront all forms of criminality and will continue to provide support and coordination to security agencies to safeguard lives and property.
The government also called on residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and rely on verified information from official sources.
It reiterated its commitment to the security and well-being of citizens, assuring that proactive measures would continue to be implemented to ensure lasting peace and stability across Niger State.
