Nigerian businessman Isaac Fayose has criticised Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over the disclosure of personal information belonging to Nollywood actor Emeka Ike.
Fayose argued that Olayinka should be facing legal consequences for allegedly publishing details obtained from the database of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking in a video shared on social media platform X, Fayose expressed concern over what he described as the lack of accountability in the country. He said the incident involving the actor’s voter registration information highlighted deeper issues within Nigeria’s legal and governance systems.
“We were all here a few weeks ago when Lere Olayinka, an aide to Wike, posted Emeka Ike’s details from INEC records.
“Up till now, no action has been taken against him, and he is still walking free. In a lawful country, Lere would have been in jail by now,” he said.
Fayose maintained that the failure of authorities to act in such situations contributes to public distrust in institutions. According to him, many Nigerians believe there is unequal application of the law, with some individuals facing consequences for offences while others escape scrutiny.
He further linked the situation to broader security and governance challenges facing the country. The businessman argued that issues such as banditry, terrorism and kidnapping continue to thrive partly because laws are not enforced uniformly.
The controversy stems from the publication of information linked to Emeka Ike’s voter registration records, an incident that generated widespread reactions online and renewed concerns about the protection of personal data held by government agencies.
The actor had earlier stated that the disclosure left him feeling unsafe and vulnerable. He said it was the first time he had experienced such fears regarding the security of his personal information.
Following the incident, Emeka Ike initiated legal action against both INEC and Lere Olayinka. The suit challenges the alleged unauthorised release of his voter registration details and seeks legal remedies over the matter.
The case has continued to attract public attention, with many Nigerians calling for stronger safeguards around personal data and greater accountability for anyone found to have breached privacy laws.
As of the time of filing this report, neither INEC nor Olayinka had publicly responded to Fayose’s latest comments.
