King Charles III knights actor Idris Elba for youth advocacy

‎Award-winning British actor, Idris Elba, has been knighted by King Charles III in recognition of his services to young people and his longstanding commitment to charitable causes.

‎According to People magazine, Elba received the honour during an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, where the King formally conferred the United Kingdom’s highest honours on the acclaimed actor.

‎Photos shared by the Royal Family on Instagram captured the moment King Charles tapped a sword on Elba’s shoulders as he knelt to receive the knighthood.

‎The Royal Family congratulated the honourees in a post, writing: “Congratulations to everyone who received honours at today’s Investiture ceremonies, hosted by The King at Windsor Castle. Sir Idris Elba for services to young people.”

‎Elba later reposted the images on his Instagram page and expressed gratitude for the recognition.

‎“We are thankful. The work continues,” the actor wrote alongside a photograph showing him wearing his medal and holding hands with his wife, Sabrina Elba, on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

‎The knighthood recognises Elba’s extensive work supporting young people through various charitable initiatives. He serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for The King’s Trust and has often credited the organisation with helping launch his career through a grant he received when he was 18 years old.

‎The honour was first announced in King Charles’ 2026 New Year Honours list and was formally conferred during Tuesday’s ceremony.

‎Speaking earlier this year at the screening of Hijack Season 2, Elba said he was still coming to terms with the recognition.

‎“I haven’t really spoken about it, but I will say that it’s a real honour to be recognised for the work. Especially trying to make as much noise for young people and the things that some of them are going through. So it feels like an honour. My family is honoured by it. I don’t even know how to talk about it,” he said.

‎Elba and his wife co-founded the Elba Hope Foundation in 2022 to support diaspora communities and expand opportunities for young people.

‎The actor recently joined King Charles at a Buckingham Palace garden party marking the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust. During the event, the pair delighted guests by stepping behind the DJ booth together.

‎King Charles, Princess Anne and Prince William regularly preside over investiture ceremonies, formally presenting knighthoods, damehoods and other honours to individuals recognised for their contributions to society.
