Oyo teachers embark on strike over abducted colleagues

‎The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely beginning Monday, June 1, over the abduction of some teachers and school pupils in the state.

‎The directive, issued by the union’s leadership, said the industrial action will remain in force until further notice, pending concrete progress on the rescue of the abducted victims.

‎At least 46 pupils and teachers were kidnapped by bandits on May 15 from Community Grammar School, Yawota Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in Oriire LGA of Oyo State.

‎The union, in a joint statement by the state NUT chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, on Sunday, said the prolonged captivity of the affected teachers and pupils has heightened fear, anxiety and uncertainty among education stakeholders across the state.

‎

‎It added that the situation has also discouraged parents from sending their children to school, thereby disrupting academic activities.

‎The NUT said the strike is intended to compel relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe and unconditional release of the abductees without further delay.

‎

‎It urged all teachers in public primary and secondary schools to comply strictly with the directive, remain law-abiding, and stay in their homes throughout the duration of the strike.

‎The union also reaffirmed its solidarity with the abducted teachers, pupils and their families, stressing that it would continue to engage relevant government agencies through lawful and structured channels until the victims regain their freedom.
