The Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA) has asked the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the eligibility of Prof. Princewill Woyinbrakemi Igbagara to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections.
In the petition to the Agency signed by its executive director Ezenwa Nwagwu, the group raised concerns over what it described as a potential violation of public service rules and constitutional provisions, alleging that Prof. Igbagara simultaneously holds positions as a lecturer at Federal University Otuoke and as Special Adviser on Science and Technology to the Bayelsa State Government.
“We request that a thorough investigation should be conducted into the employment and appointment status of Prof. Igbagara. Clarification should be sought as to whether he has formally resigned or complied with all legal requirements necessary to contest for elective office,” the petition which was also copied to the All Progressives Congress (APC) stated.
Citing Section 66(1)(f) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the organisation stressed that any public servant seeking election into the National Assembly must resign, withdraw, or retire from public service at least 30 days before the election.
“As at 20th April 2026, he is believed to have held both roles concurrertiy,” the petition stated.
It also referenced Rule 030422 of the Public Service Rules, which prohibits public officers from engaging in partisan political activities or presenting themselves as candidates for elective office without proper disengagement.
The group expressed concern that failure to comply with these provisions could amount to a breach of constitutional and electoral principles, warning that allowing such candidacy without scrutiny could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
PAACA also pointed to what it described as a potential conflict of interest, noting that occupying roles within both federal and state structures may create divided loyalties and possible misuse of public resources.
