Civil War: Nigeria wouldn’t have won without Niger Republic – Obasanjo

‎Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that Nigeria would not have emerged victorious in the civil war without assistance from the neighboring Niger Republic.

‎During an appearance on ‘Soni Irabor Live’ broadcasted on News Central, Obasanjo mentioned that Nigeria received supplies via Niger Republic for its troops during the conflict.

‎The Nigerian civil war commenced on July 6, 1967, and concluded on January 15, 1970.

‎The former head of state expressed concern regarding the treatment of Niger Republic by the Nigerian government following the military takeover, which resulted in the ousting of democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, 2023.

‎Obasanjo criticized the Nigerian government’s choice to sever electricity supply to Niger Republic after the coup, despite the significant contribution of Niger Republic in the development of the Kainji Dam.

‎The ex-military leader remarked that Nigeria has diminished its influence and ability to affect policies and events across Africa.

‎He reflected on Nigeria’s support for Angola and South Africa during the military regime, particularly in their struggles against colonialism and apartheid.

‎He also recalled that Nigeria provided Angola with $20 million to aid its fight for independence in the 1970s.

‎“Allow me to express this gently. Currently, Nigeria is not participating in discussions. What events are occurring that Nigeria is influencing or affecting, or who is being affected by Nigeria?” He asked.

‎“Consider how we have managed ECOWAS, an organization that took us five decades to establish. In a matter of days, we have mismanaged it. We have nearly dismantled it.

‎“Niger Republic experienced a coup. They are our neighboring country. The reality is that at least 30 percent of the population in Niger Republic maintains a positive relationship with Nigeria.

‎“During the construction of the Kainji Dam… if Niger Republic were to construct another dam, the Kainji Dam would be rendered ineffective. Therefore, we assured Niger Republic that for their electricity needs, we would provide whatever they require. This is our responsibility.

‎“Furthermore, without the support of Niger Republic, achieving victory in the civil war would have been challenging. We relied on them to transport supplies to our troops at the front lines.

‎“In light of all this, when they experienced a coup, our immediate response was to close the borders, followed by cutting off their electricity supply.”

‎Obasanjo served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1976 to 1979 and as civilian President from 1999 to 2007.
