Iran’s defence minister, Revolutionary Guard commander killed by Israel

‎The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Gen. Mohammad Pakpour and Iranian defence minister Amir Nasirzadeh were killed in Israeli strikes in Iran on Saturday, three sources familiar with the matter tell Reuters.

‎Earlier, Israeli officials assessed that Pakpour, Nasirzadeh, and the chief of Iran’s intelligence were likely killed in the strikes.

‎Several top Iranian regime and military commanders were targeted in this morning’s strikes, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. The results of the strikes remain unclear.

‎Meanwhile, Satellite imagery released by the New York Times shows damage to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s compound in Tehran after an Israeli airstrike.

‎An Israeli official confirmed Khamenei was among several senior Iranian leaders targeted, but the outcome is unclear.

‎Khamenei’s current whereabouts are unknown, with reports suggesting he was moved to a secure location before the strike.

‎The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) launched a “preemptive strike” on Iran, targeting military and regime sites, including Khamenei’s offices.

‎In a statement issued on Saturday morning, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced a “special and permanent state of emergency” across the country.

‎Shortly after the announcement, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) imposed a nationwide “prohibition on educational activities, gatherings and workplaces,” exempting only essential sectors.

‎The military also warned citizens to remain close to protected spaces amid fears of a possible retaliatory strike.

‎“This is a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of missiles being launched toward the State of Israel,” the IDF said in a statement posted on X.
