A Bangladeshi journalist was brutally killed in the city of Gazipur, prompting widespread condemnation from media groups and renewed concerns over press freedom in the country.
Asaduzzaman Tuhin, a reporter for the daily Protidiner Kagoj, was found dead late Wednesday night after reportedly being attacked and killed by unidentified assailants. Police say an investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made.
The Bangladesh Central Press Club (B.C.P.C) condemned the killing as “a direct attack on press freedom” and called for swift action.
“This is not just the murder of a journalist it’s an attempt to silence voices committed to truth,” said Khan Selim Rahman, the founding president of B.C.P.C., in a statement Thursday. “We demand the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the perpetrators.”
The organization’s founding general secretary, Md. Mahidul Hasan Sarkar, urged authorities to identify the attackers within 24 hours, warning that impunity would embolden further violence against journalists.
The press club issued a three-point demand: arrest of the killers, a fair and speedy trial, and enhanced protection for journalists nationwide.
Tuhin’s death adds to a growing list of journalists who have been harassed, attacked, or killed in Bangladesh in recent years, raising concerns among rights groups and media watchdogs.
