2023 poll: Reps Gaza, Ari, others, the burden on political parties

By Francis Nansak

The political calculations hanging on the neck of political parties, especially from Nasarawa western zone, comprising 5 local government areas, ahead of parties primary election, come 2022 is much more a burden as those aspiring to replacing Honourable Jonathan Gbefwi Gaza and his counterpart, honourable Abdulmumuni Ari are germane.

The zone has 2 House of representatives members, Honourable Jonathan Gaza represents Kokona, karu and keffi while Abdulmumuni Ari, is representing Nasarawa and Toto, federal constituency,in the green chamber of the national assembly.

In a quick roll called on former and present house of representative members that were elected to represent the five local government areas from 1999 till date are, Honourable Salisu Mohammed Raj from 1999 to 2003,he was defeated by honourable Ahmed Aliyu Wadada in 2003.Wadada then took over and was defeated in 2011 by Honourable Ishaq Kana ,of the Congress for progressive change(CPC) and honourable Jonathan Gbefwi Gaza, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, replaced kana, who opted for governorship election but lost in 2015.

Honourable Jonathan Gbefwi Gaza, from 2015,was elected under the PDP is currently serving, but has however defected from the PDP to joined the ruling All progressive Congress,in the state,he is seeking to be reelected for the third time, come 2023 as representative of Kokona, karu and keffi federal constituency.

Similarly, those that had represented Toto and Nasarawa federal constituency till date included, Honourable Samuel Egye,he was elected in 1999 on the platform of the PDP ,but on his bid for a third term in office, he was defeated by Honourable Musa Owana(late) in 2011, and Owana, who also got re-election in 2015, died two years into his second tenure,he was succeeded by Arch Abdullahi Jafa’aru, through a bye election,he became elected and completed late honourable Musa owana’s tenure.

Then came Honourable Abdulmumuni Ari ,due to the vacancy created by Abdullahi Jafa’aru who in 2019 contested primary for the position of governor and lost to the incumbent governor Engineer Abdullahi Sule.

This gave way to honourable Ari ,who currently is the house of representative member that is representing Nasarawa/Toto federal constituency.

And as the electioneering year is fast approaching, which will usually begins by a proper conduct of primary election as expected of every interested political party,it is no longer news that there are those who have shown strong interest seeking to replace the two current occupants of the federal house of representative sit at the green chamber of the national assembly from Nasarawa western zone of Nasarawa State.

Currently, there are no fewer than 5 persons justling for the post with hope of replacing the incumbent federal house of representatives legislators under different political platforms, especially from the two major parties,APC and PDP. And they are, Danladi Awoje,Newman Maitoro and Nuhu Gwari, all are members of the PDP,while Dr Kitso Nghargu, honourable Abdullaziz Sarki, of the ruling APC ,gonning for Kokona, karu and keffi federal constituency in the 2023 election.

And for Toto/Nasarawa federal constituency , those canvassing for the position are, Honourable Ahmed Baba Yaya(APC) Aliyu Dogara(PDP) as many whose body language has shown their interest are said to be making serious consultations.

The obvious ahead of the 2022 primaries giving the political circumstance from Nasarawa western zone,is that the electorates are seriously looking forward to a change of those that are at the moment representing them for reasons they alleged hinges on poor representation.

Others are of the opinion that the two positions has only served the interest a few, Kokona LGA had one chance, while Keffi and karu have had 8 years by each of their locals (Wadada and Gaza) as it will be wise for someone from Kokona to be elected in order to cost in the balance come 2023.

Both parties in this zone have a huge burden ahead of the 2022 primary which is capable of determining who represents the 5 local government areas. However ,if the incumbent house members plays their political game well, there is every chance that they can retain their positions ,but the yearning and aspirations from the electorates is far from maintaining the legislators not minding which political party takes the lead.
