…Investigative Panel On Police Brutality Submits Report
Benue State Committee saddled with the responsibility of investigating the brutalities meted to citizens of the state by the disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) has submitted its report to the Benue state Government.
While submitting the report in Govt House Makurdi, the chairman of the panel and immediate past Chief Justice of the state, Justice Adah Onum said the committee discovered numerous brutalities meted to members of the public by the division in different parts of the state and recommended the sum of N304, 535,095.85 as compensation to be paid to the victims.
They victims who consisted of those brutally murdered by the police in cold blood leaving families without respective heads and bread winners, those who died in police custody owing to complications arising from torture and/or other forms of abuse of police powers including unwarranted denial of rights to bail, persons who suffered grievous bodily hurts or non-grievious bodily hurt as defined under law in the hands of the police, those whose properties were destroyed by the police or unjustly seized and confiscated by the police, persons who were subjected to intimidation with the sole aim of extorting money from them as well as those whose rights were infringed upon by the police.
The committee also recommended for some police officers to be investigated for their role in the various misconducts with a view at prosecuting them.
Receiving the report on behalf of Benue state government, the state deputy governor Engr Benson Abounu assured the public of the full implementation of the recommendation to serve as a deterrence against future occurrence. He equally commended the committee for a task well done.
