Worried by the escalating security situation in the South-east, Global Peace Movement International UK has condemned the continued killing of innocent people in the region.
President General of the group, Dr. Mike Uyi said that they were especially appalled by numerous accounts of loss of lives, regrettably of innocent people, who had become targets of attacks by the so-called unknown gunmen.
Dr. Uyi noted that the destruction of lives and properties have negative consequences on the future of the region and the country as a whole, stressing that the country may not experience the patronage of foreign investors.
“GPMI wishes to therefore urge Mr President to assert his authority as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and crush all elements that have picked up arms against the states. Too much blood is being spilled in the land, we can’t stand the sight of it again.”
“We vehemently condemn the activities in Igboland by both known and unknown gunmen, arsonists, and brigands whose actions are clearly calculated to create an atmosphere of civil unrest in the region”.
Uyi said he expected the federal government to adopt dialogue in addressing the security situation in the region in order to identify ways to accommodate the grievances of all groups and individuals for peace and normal economic and social life to return to the region.
“GPMI will conduct an independent investigation into the killings to avoid the bandwagon belief of just coming to the conclusion that IPOB or ESN is responsible”.
Uyi further stated that there’s the need to consult responsible leadership in the South East that is well respected in Nigeria and in the committee of Nations like His Excellency Dave Umahi Ebonyi State Governor and other stakeholders.
Uyi described Umahi as the best and brightest governor in the region and said he is the governor among governors, an example of Igbo exceptionalism, Igbo capacity of turning difficult things into something.
