NYSC members charged to kick against ethnic, religious intolerance

Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), as agents of unity and integration, have been charged to steer clear of ethnic, religious and political intolerance because they breed division.

Giving the charge to the 2021 Batch A, Stream II members at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Ede, Osun State, a former NYSC Director of Procurement, Evangelist Gabriel Ojo Alonge, also admonished them to do all they can to promote unity in the country.

According to him, the greatest measure put in place to entrench unity in the nation is the establishment of the NYSC which has impacted lives across the 48 years of its existence and as such scrapping the scheme will be a very dangerous step to take.

Alonge added that youths will experience great suffering if the scheme is scrapped as they will not have the opportunity to meet a whole number of people from different ethnic groups which enables one to develop the spirit of oneness.

He stressed that it will be a dangerous venture to launch fresh graduates into the larger society and world of work without the prerequisite training needed for them to be patriotic, skillful and employable.

He said that the scheme afforded graduates the basic work experience required by employers of labour at entry level which according to him will be lacking should the scheme be scrapped.

Alonge also said that the scheme has over the years brought about a free flow of labour across the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory adding that it would have been impossible without the scheme as some states would be deprived of the expertise and skillfulness of graduate youths in the nation.

He urged corps members to avoid the dissemination of false information as it is capable of causing mayhem in the society.

“I am advising you to lead exemplary lives. Be active and impactful in your respective places of assignments. Be loyal to the country and the scheme and be team players. The strict adherence to these virtues is a sure way to success.

“I do not want you to be perturbed about the ongoing news that NYSC will be scrapped but one of the major things that can bring down the scheme is division.”
