The management of Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igbo-Ora, has declared Friday January 22, as a lecture/ work free day for both staff and students of the institution.
The institution said that it declared tomorrow, Friday as work/lecture free day in view of the prevailing security situation in Ibarapa geo-political zone of the state.
Newsmenlearnt that Igbo-Ora is one of the towns in Ibarapa geo-political zone in Oyo state.
Recall that Ibarapa geo-political zone which consists of three local government areas in Oyo South District; Ibarapa North, Ibarapa East and Ibarapa Central Local government areas has witnessed series of attacks, killings and kidnapping by some suspected hoodlums in recent times.
Last year, a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mr. Fatai Aborode was killed by yet to be identified gunmen.
On January 4th, Oyo State Police command confirmed the killing of three people including owner of a petrol station in Idere in Ibarapa Central local government area. The police also confirmed the abduction one Dr. Akindele in Aiyete in Ibarapa North Local government area.
Another farmer, Monsuru Aderoju was also kidnapped at Oke Agbede in Igangan in Ibarapa zone. He was kidnapped on Monday 4th January, 2021.
Three people were reportedly killed when Amotekun operatives engaged some youths in Tapa town in Ibarapa North Local government area.
Few days later, about three people were reportedly killed during a clash between Amotekun operatives and some suspected criminals in Aiyete town.
The management of the college has however said that tomorrow, Friday has been declared as a lecture/ work free day for both students and staff. The institution urged students and staff to remain indoor throughout the day.
The institution in a memo signed by acting Registrar of the institution, Mr. P. K. Oyediran urged members of staff and students to comply with the directive.
He said, “This is to inform staff and students that the management has declared Friday, 22 January, 2021 as work and lecture free day based on the current security situation in Ibarapaland.
“In view of the above development, all staff and students are enjoined to stay at home throughout the day.
“Staff and students are expected to resume on Monday 25 January 2021 for normal academic activities to commence immediately. Above is for information and strict compliance by all staff and students”.
Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mrs. Opeyemi Olawore confirmed the directive to DAILY POST on Thursday.
Olawore spoke in a telephone conversation with DAILY POST.
She said, “Yes, you are confirming it from me that the institution has declared tomorrow as a work free day for staff and students.”
