GLOBAL PEACE MOVEMENT INTERNATIONAL (UK), an international human rights, good governance and anti corruption organization, with head office in the UK, has called on Federal Government to take urgent and critical steps to nip the on going #ENDSARS turned #ENDSWAT in the bud, before it escalates to unprecedented dimensions.

This call was made at the World Press Conference, contained in a Press Release signed by the Dr. Mike Uyi and Mr. Sam Okereke, the President General and Director of National Affairs respectively, after the launch of the #CIVILIAN LIVES MATTER by the organization recently in Abuja, in which the organization insisted that Nigerian civilians can no longer take the kind of inhuman treatments ranging from extra judicial executions, maiming, assaults, harassments, extortions, victimizations, oppression, suppressions and dehumanising treatment meted out to them, by the military and paramilitary law enforcement agencies that refer to them as BLOODY CIVILIANS.

The organization availed that the launch was to awaken the citizens consciousness to their right to demand justice and it was in this light that it called on the Federal Government to take pragmatic and convincing steps Nigerians can trust, by taking the appropriate steps that will persuade the protesters to end the protest. Top of the recommended steps include a state of affairs broadcast by President Muhammadu Buhari disbanding SWAT, pronouncing and directing the Minister of Police Affairs, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission and Inspector General of Police, on total restructuring, reforming and transformation of the police force, with clear and specific policy statements on Police funding, welfare, code of conduct, rules of engagement, conditions of service, service life assurance, training and recruitment processes.
A clear directive to dismantle all SARS facilities nationwide and determine those who were really culpable and transfer them to divisional headquarters of their jurisdiction, a judicial process should be instituted to get justice for the wronged and punishment for erring officers.

The organization while condemning the attack on peaceful protesters by sponsored disgruntled elements, charged the IGP to take proactive measures in ensuring such insolence was not repeated at this fragile period, arguing that it was quite hasty for the IGP to announce the new SWAT team to take the place of SARS, insisting that the force does not have the manpower, to undertake such venture, if they so claimed that no member of SARS shall be admitted into SWAT, as the move only infuriated the sensibilities of the citizens, who were expecting a total overhaul urgently.

Warning that the Federal Government should act fast to avert looming crisis, going by the economic down turn of the effect of covid19 on the nation’s already fragile economy, inflation, interest and unemployment rates, hunger in the land, joblessness and hopelessness could cause uprising. Citing the need to avert something similar to the Arab spring in the country, stressing that the international community was apprehensive, foreign investors were assessing the situation, captains of industries were groaning, the economic activities slowed down and citizens grounded in tension, making a perfect recipe for a revolution.
