KANSIEC Fixes 16th January for Local Govt Elections

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced 16th January 2020 as date for the forthcoming Local Government Elections in the state.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Garba Ibrahim Sheka made this known on Monday during a press conference to intimate the press about preparations made so far.

According to him, the Commission from the date of this announcement is given political parties in the state a period of three months to prepare for the elections as the tenure of the current Local Government Chairmen expires on 11th February 2021.

Sheka noted that they are required by the law to give political parties a 21 days notice however, the Commission after stakeholders meetings and consultations with political parties opted to borrow a leaf from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a three months notice which doesn’t violates the commission’s laws.

The State Electoral Chairman further stated that a detailed and comprehensive timetable for the elections would be provided to all political parties participating in the elections to carry them along and participates actively.

Garba stated that in order to avoid issues with AdHoc staff allowances, the Commission has decided to make direct payment into their accounts and a total of 48,000 AdHoc Staff have been engaged for the exercise.
