The UK based International Human Rights, Good Governance and Anti Corruption Organization, the GLOBAL PEACE MOVEMENT INTERNATIONAL (UK), has commended the conveners of the coordinated #EndSARS protests and teeming Nigerian youths for having the courage to stand against all odds to speak out, condemn and demand for the dissolution of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), as a result of the lawlessness, recklessness, brutality, extortions, human rights abuses, harassments, robberies and even extra judiciary killings, that were associated with their mode of operations.
In a press statement signed by the organisation’s President General and Director of National Affairs, Dr Mike Uyi and Mr. Sam Okereke respectively and made available to the press via electronic medium, the organisation that has just launched the CIVILIAN LIVES MATTER (CLM), for which the President General flew into the country from UK, in the wake of the #EndSars protests, emphasised that the final dissolution of SARS was as a result of the persistent agitations for the ban of the police unit in the last 4 years, with a lot of restructuring and reforming that did not yield the desired outcome, as the unit continued their mode of operations, which were tales of woes and nightmares to the common citizens, especially the youths.
The organisation maintained the concept of SARS cannot be banned nor dissolved, as it an important arm of the force, with key responsibilities, rather the obnoxious, nefarious, and irresponsible disposition of the current mode of engagement in dressing, code of conduct, approach and orientation, were what was been disbanded. Citing the instance that at inception, the operatives were focused and hence effective, but like the issue with the system of not effectively monitoring policies, the unit derailed and became law unto themselves, committing heinous crimes with impunity, trampling on the rights of those they were meant to protect and cutting many promising dreams and aspirations of young Nigerians at their prime.
While charging President Muhammad Buhari to make a policy statement on the matter as the Commander-in-Chief, to put these raging protests nationwide, which has transformed from #EndSars to #SarsMustEnd to a conclusive rest. Insisting that the Federal Government should constitute a joint action committee of the Police, Police Service Commission, Police Affairs Ministry, Ministry of Information and National Orientation, and the National Orientation Agency to see to the effective restructuring, while carrying the citizens along to ensure that the heinous crimes which SARS is known for is brought to a conclusive end, by investigating, prosecuting and punishing those culpable, to serve as deterrent to others and sanitising the whole police structures.
