The struggle by other ethnic groups in Delta state outside the purported zonning of gubernitorial candidate to Urhobo ethnic come 2023, was on Tuesday seemingly laid to rest when the” Urhobo Youth Leaders Association” ( UYLA) cautioned a group known as” Delta Ijaw Advocacy Group ( DIAG)”to be mindful of its comments that may hear up the political scene in the state ahead of the 2023 elections.
In the last few weeks, Ijaw Advocacy Group ( DIAG) had taken to social media, among others, insisting that it was the turn of the Ijaws to produce the next Governor of the state come 2023, saying that the issue of zoning the position to the Urhobos, was a ruse and cannot hold any firm decision in the state.
But in a statement signed the UYLA Acting president,Chief Anthony Ofoni, a copy made available to our correspondent in Asaba on Tuesday, stated that” the Delta State people’s Democratic Party ( PDP) Barr Kingsley Esiso should commended for only reiterating that the rotational politics that was created by the PDP founding fathers so that every senatorial district in Delta state will benefit, was a welcome development
Part of the statement reads” for the purpose of equity and Justice, it’s natural that Delta Central takes a shot again after the completion of the first circle, so, the call for Barr Kingsley Esiso’s resignation over his firm belief on this reality at a PDP function recently in Oviorie by DIAG, was not necessary, but very provocative and uncalled for”
The statement added that the rotational arrangement was necessitated by the need to sustain fairness and equity in Delta state, and therefore charged the DIAG to support the candidacy of Urhobo from Delta Central Senatorial District in 2023 before the return of power to Delta South, based on the PDP zonning arrangement.
Ofoni further cautioned that” any attempt to the contrary will be resisted because the rotation is not based on ethnic groups but on senatorial districts”
Sources said that the Ijaws are not in any way relenting as they have times without numbers, insisted that it is their turn to produce the next Governor of the state after Governor Ifeanyi Okowa”s tenure, and had put in place all forms of measures that will make them succeed amidst the protest by the Urhobos across the state.
The Ijaws have also dismissed as a mere threats by the Urhobos that any attempt would be resisted, describing it as nothing to them as nobody can stop them, an ijaw stakeholder, Chief Thomas Ebi said
