The Chairman, Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Prof Garba Ibrahim Sheka on Monday said, in a bid to avoid reoccurrence of challenges that marred the last local government elections in the state, the commission has ensured that all electoral materials needed for the conduct of the elections are produced in Nigeria to avoid unnecessary delay.
The Chairman who spoke to Metro Daily Nigeria said the idea came as a result of bitter lessons learnt from the previous elections where the contractor in charge of supplying the needed materials had to travel to China for the production but at the end, delivering the items at the right time became a problem causing delay in the whole process.
” We have decided that all our electoral materials be printed in Nigeria and not in China to avoid the kind of delay that almost disorganized our last election ”
He said, the move will further create employment at a time the nation is battling with unemployment as only indigenous contractors have been engaged to provide the various materials needed as the production work has reached sixty percent completion.
According to Sheka, the early preparation would enable KANSIEC to receive on time and distribute the nonsensitive materials to all the centres at least two weeks before the elections while the sensitive materials would be distributed 24hours before the elections as against last time where most materials arrived at the Aminu Kano International Airport on the eve of the elections.
Also, ” only parties only parties contesting are to appear on the ballot papers to avoid confusing electorate especially those at the rural areas with too many political parties’ logos as was done before”, he added.
Prof. Garba assured recalled that the issue of videos of under aged children casting votes during the previous Local Government elections turned out to be videos concocted to discredit the election were confirmed to be doctored videos.
Ibrahim further stated that the INEC committee constituted to verify the process, videos and pictures later confirmed that the various videos and pictures were from other places even from other countries.
He pointed out that evidences gathered clearly showed that card readers appeared in some of the videos which was not used by the commission, while the children appeared to be carrying out the alleged voting without any official or adult, that, he said, clearly discredit the credibility of such videos.
The State Electoral Commission’s Boss assured that the forthcoming elections which date is yet to be announced would be conducted in a free and fair manners just as all relevant stakeholders are being carried along to ensure a smooth conduct.
