Nosa Akenzua, Asaba
Tears have continued to flow freely on the deplorable state of Asaba- Ughelli road in Delta state as the situation has attracted armed bandits who have began their seige on unsuspecting travellers/ motorists, especially during nighfall
Investigation revealed that a route under normal circumstances, should not take more than one and half hours, but this is not the case of Asaba – Ughelli road as the situation worsened by the abandoned project works for no cogent reasons adduced by contracting firms handling the project, takes drivers almost three hours to get to their destinations.
A formerly two way route from Ibusa Community,is at present a single way as some unknown construction workers are busy filling the second half of the road with red earth sand as these workers do not look like Julius Berger whose presence could have hastened the assignment as they in the process swoop on travellers Motorists to demand for N2,000
Between Ibusa Community and Ogwashi Uku Community, the traffic slows down terribly as one drives past the newly built University of Technology midway between Ibusa and Ogwashi Uku,a situation that often portends dangers and death trap if not carefully followed
Although there are constantly road blocks mounted by fierce looking security agents at every stop on the potholes, It was gathered that armed bandits including Kidnappers have continued to undermine their presence to carry out their nefarious activities on unsuspecting travellers Motorists almost on daily basis as some the victims who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity described the situation as pathetic under the noses of the security agents whom they alleged aid and abit the hoodlums during their Operations.
One of them said’ We have been severally robbed on road because of the deplorable state of the road and under the noses of the security agents, they often pretend not to know until they have gone before they will start searching for them including venting their anger on the Motorists/ travellers”
Further investigation revealed that the road networks within Isoko region are pitiably not motorable but from Kwale town to Ozoro is passable to some degree, while the major obstacles lie ahead of Ughelli town where Commuters on this road liking Asaba with the Core Urhobo area deserves better attention by the Contractors who have allegedly abandoned their works to mobilize to sites
Speaking with our reporter, the state Commissioner for Works, Chief James Augouye however appealed to travellers Motorists to exercise restrain as the Contractors would soon be mobilized to sites, adding that,” Ughelli Asaba road is completely Federal road but Governor Ifeanyi Okowa swung into action to ensure the road is fixed, we have done several Sections on the road and it will be Completed, the Magnanimous Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is determined to make lives meaningful for Deltans”
Statices of the road accidents revealed that no fewer than 61 persons were killed in 2019 through ghasly motor accident on the road, particularly around the Mobile police base among others where the road abysmally failed with potholes littered along to Kwale axis and before Ughelli town
Last year 2019 was a hell of the travellers Motorists and many passengers were killed on the road, even my elder brother died on the road because of the deplorable state of the road with potholes” Mrs Williams Edith who spoke to our reporter said in tears, adding that unless something urgent steps are taken to repair the road,it might kill more persons or travellers
For the weekly travellers on the route, sellers and buyers going to their destinations with assorted items, such as Garri in full and half bags, plantains in bundles and Palm Oil in Jerry Cans are sold freely on both sides of the Ozoro Ughelli road stretch as the traders run after the travellers Motorists with their in most cases at the deplorable spots
On security, the Police Commissioner in the state, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwah said that monitoring team has been constituted to ensure Policemen on the special road blocks do not aid and abit the hoodlums as alleged by some of the travellers Motorists on the road, adding that anyone caught in such act would be dismissed from the police force.
