Angry mob at the pupolar Asaba Delta state Ogbeogonogo market on Sunday foiled an alleged attempt by suspected insane man to rape a female palm oil trader in the market
Eyewitness Ngozi Ejeme said that the suspect suddenly emerged from the bush part of the state owned water board sharing boundary with the market in torned clothes and zodiac looking with overgrown bears and a walking stick allegedly from behind grabbed the palm oil seller and while the struggle to remove her clothes lasted, the mob went after him when the victim shouted for help that was followed with the use of her teeth for defence.
Leader of the mob who spoke to Journalists at the scene, Emeka Nnadi said:” we heard the shout of the woman where were playing draught for and we rushed into the market and discovered the man in dirty clothes with over grown bears holding her waist very tight and trying to rape her when we immediately started beating him until we succeeded and also discovered that the man was sick the way and manner he was shouting during the beating, but what was important to us was to rescue the woman from the dangers and we were able to pull the man away and took him to the police”
It was gathered that the victim ( name withheld) is mother of three children from the Urhobo speaking tribe and a pupolar red oil trader within the open space of the Ogbeogonogo market who had few months ago allegedly encountered a similar situation in the same market but was averted by taskforce officials attached to the market.
Sources said that various insane men in the past, especially during nightfall had allegedly attempted raping housewives who sell late in the evenings but for the intervention of the security guards who had always been on hand to save the situation and in most cases beat up the suspects.
Investigation revealed that influx of insane men and women in Asaba and its environs have created tension within the state government officials, especially workers at the state ministry of Women Affairs who described the situation as strange and unfortunate.But the Commissioner in the ministry, Mrs Flora Alanta who confirmed the incident to Journalists in Asaba, said that the ministry was committed with a view to ensuring they are evacuated and taken to homes where they can be treated
She said:” we have seen the increasing rate of these mad men and women in Asaba and its environs and we are doing something to ensure they are removed from the streets to homes where they can be treated, especially rid off the streets to ensure the environments are clean, and we have received several reports of embarrassment caused to unsuspecting persons, traders in the market by these insane men”
They are said to be littering everywhere with banana pills and excretas including used tissue papers at every nooks and crannies of Asaba and its environs, especially uncompleted buildings where they retire into to sleep at night as the situation has been generating comments in areas they frequent and stay often.
Uncomfirmed Sources said that the insane persons are from neighbouring states, particularly from Edo and Anambra states as in most cases motorists plying Asaba Benin express way said they are always on the road trecking to unknown destinations.
At the A Division Police station, some police officer who spoke to Journalists on condition of anonymity said the suspect was sent away from the station when it was clear that he was insane as he was consistently giggling at every question he was asked by Asaba
