The Delta state scholarship board says it has uncovered 822 ghost benficiaries of the bursary board, adding that investigation of the fraud was ongoing.
The board Executive Secretary, Mr Sunny Orishedere who spoke to Journalists on Friday in Asaba, confirmed that the 822 fake beneficiaries of the bursary were discovered to be workers within the board who sponsored the names of their dead relations’ children including children of deceased civil servants and physically challenged.
Noting that since the inception of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa led administration, Orishedere said that the board had recorded 2,500 beneficiaries of the scheme, adding that the board painstakingly efforts to screen the numbers of benefactors to 1678 including new and existing applicants through effective monitoring and evaluation
He said that the payment was to the first batch of 2019 beneficiaries, noting that the process would be completed within two weeks, stressing that the state Governor Dr Ifeanyi Okowa was passionate about the vulnerable in the society as backlogs have been paid to benficiaries recently, and advised the beneficiaries to put the funds into Judicious use in order to encourage the government to do more.
One of the physically challenged, Emeke Olise who also spoke to Journalists in Asaba, thanked Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for giving hope to the hopeless and promised that the beneficiaries would not disappoint the state government and ensure that the money would be Judiciously used and appreciated the board for instituting measures to alleviate the suffering of the persons with various forms of challenges , especially children of deceased civil servants.
