Nigerian Senate in rowdy session

Nigerian Senate in rowdy session

The Senate plenary on Wednesday turned ‎rowdy when the Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi alleged that the Social Intervention Programme of the Federal Government, which was introduced by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has been politicised.

Olujimi alleged that beneficiaries of the programme were being asked to provide details of their Permanent Voter Card in the application form.

While presenting a copy of the form, she further alleged that ‘I Stand with Buhari’ was written on it.
Before the Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who defended the Buhari-led administration and the programme could speak, the chamber had become noisy as the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party exchanged words across the divide.

The APC lawmakers also forced the Senate to resolve that the SURE-P policy of the immediate past ‎PDP government led by former President Goodluck Jonathan be probed.

By Augustine Aminu

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, an international based None Governmental Organization, Global Peace Movement International (GPMI), have thrown their weight behind Sen. Godswill Akpabio’s re-election bid.

Dr. Mike Uyi, President General of the organization, in an interview with newsmen in Lagos described Governor Akpabio as an icon of democracy and a good example of what leadership should represent in Nigeria and Africa at large.

He said their support for Senator Akpabio was not unconnected with his landmark achievements in this democratic dispensation.

“Available and verifiable facts singled out Senator Akpabio as a pride of Africa, worthy of emulation”.

Dr. Uyi further stated that Senator Akpabio’s achievements in the areas of human capital development; infrastructure and quality legislation remains a reference point among lawmakers in Nigeria.

“It is on record that this Icon of democracy during his time as the Executive Governor of Akwa-Ibom State introduced free, compulsory and qualitative education policy; free medical care for pregnant women, children and the aged; and the massive infrastructural investment”, Dr. Uyi emphasized.

“We decided to throw our weight behind a man who has what it takes to represent his people and that is why we are supporting Senator Akpabio.”

“He has good track record as a politician who means well for the common man in the village. Not the politicians who are afraid to stay among their people in their immediate environment. Senator Akpabio is a grassroots man who knows the needs of the masses, and shares the little he has with them”.

Onnoghen’s trial: YPP slams Buhari govt over ‘hypocrisy’ on CJN’s case

Young Progressives Party, YPP, has described call by the Federal Government for the resignation of Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as hypocritical.

In a statement on Saturday in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary of YPP, Mr. Olawale Egbeola, advised the presidency to allow the rule of law take its course without interference.

Egbeola said the rule of law remained one of the fundamental pillars of democracy and should not be subjected to intuition or the will of an individual or group, adding that anything short of this would be an invitation to anarchy.

He said: “The Young Progressives Party, YPP, strongly condemns any acts of corruption by any individual or group irrespective of ethnicity, religion, social status or gender, but is of the firm belief that the law is supreme and is the basis upon which the war against corruption should be fought and won.

“The recent allegation over declaration of assets against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, is sad, especially coming at a time we are about to go into a general election that will ultimately define the destiny of our great country.

“We also observe that the haste by the Federal Government in calling for the resignation of Justice Onnoghen is highly hypocritical, especially coming from a government renowned for overlooking allegations of corruption against cabinet members.

“This only goes to confirm the comment made by Senator Shehu Sani that the Presidency fights corruption using insecticides when it comes to the opposition, but apply deodorant when it comes to members of his cabinet.”

Egbeola noted that the APC-led government, “with an unacceptable reputation of flagrant disregard for the rule of law, should desist from arm twisting relevant agencies within its control.”

According to him, the Presidency should allow the wheel of justice to move smoothly without interference, “rather than the current desperation that is beginning to suggest to Nigerians a conspiracy to get rid of Justice Onnoghen by all means.

“While time is irrelevant in the fight against corruption, the verdict of whether he is guilty or not is exclusively the prerogative of a competent court of law and the Young Progressives Party is calling on the Federal Government to first allow the internal disciplinary processes of the National Judicial Council, NJC, which is a body saddled with the responsibility of taking disciplinary actions against erring judicial officers, to be completely exhausted.”
