No fewer than 18 states are participating in the 2018 National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) which was flagged-off by Rivers governor Nyesom Wike amid pomp and ceremony at the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the 31st edition of the festival, which attracted the states has as theme, “Nigeria: Our Festivals, Our Heritage’’.

Wike, dressed in beautiful Rivers Traditional Attire with a walking stick to match, said the festival would serve as a unifying force for Nigeria.

He noted that NEFEST provided a platform for the states to make the most of the nation’s culture, adding that culture empowers humanity by improving inter-personal relationships.

“Whether we agree or not, our diversity is what defines and binds us as a nation under the glorious sun.

“Although our tribes and tongues may differ, we are a nation bound by a common destiny and firmly glued together by the spirit of brotherhood, cultural harmony, and inter-ethnic solidarity instead of discord, tribalism, nepotism and sectionalism.

“What is imperative, therefore, is for us to take full advantage of the innate strength in our diversity together, with our incredible human and natural resource endowments to build a just, united and prosperous country for the present and future generations.”

Wike also restated that the essence of the festival was to promote national peace, unity and cohesion.

“Over the years, NAFEST has become the veritable platform for the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory to meet, showcase and make the most of our cultures and diversity.’’

He said that in addition to celebrating Nigeria’s rich cultural tapestry, NAFEST also provided the opportunity for cultural activism.

According to him, the festival provides creative images and expressions to engage our leaders on the politics of nation-building, human rights, regional integration, inter-ethnic harmony, national peace and development.

In his remarks, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, the Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, commended Rivers Government for making history for the people of the state.

“Almighty God will repay Governor Wike for his contributions to the peace that he is promoting.’

Runsewe said that because Rivers was peaceful, it had hosted several international and national events, adding that outside Lagos and Abuja, Port Harcourt enjoyed the highest air traffic and hotel patronage.

Also, Mrs Tonye Briggs Oniyide, the state Commissioner of Culture and Tourism, said that Rivers had fully prepared to host what she called the very best NAFEST since its inception.

The Chairman of the event, Chief Ferdinand Alabrabra, said that Rivers remained the choice of all major national events because of its strategic peaceful nature.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that states participating in the event displayed splendid cultures and dances at while the 23 local government areas of Rivers also displayed their rich culture and tradition.

Some youths spiced up the event with breath-taking calisthenic displays that thrilled spectators.

BBNaija: Bambam reveals ‘secret’ of getting into Big Brother House

Bambam

Former Big Brother Naija housemate, Oluwabamike Olawunmi also known as Bambam has given prospective applicants some tips on how to make through the audition stage.

Recall the Chief Executive Officer of Multichoice Nigeria, John Ugbe, had announced details of the fourth edition of the popular reality TV show billed for this year as well as audition dates and venue.

Against that background, Bambam during an interview with Plus TV Africa yesterday, disclosed that applicants do not need to bribe anyone in cash, sex or kind to make it through the multiple audition stages.

She said: “I didn’t know anybody, I didn’t have to sleep with anybody to get into the house.

“You just need to go there and be your original self. The psychologists that will audition you are only looking for something unique in you, so be you. Don’t try and impress by being somebody else or being whom you are not.

“Go prepared, have something you are working on, answer the questions being asked correctly, and just have faith,” she concluded.

ASUU strike: Seun Kuti blasts parents for attending political rallies

Seun Kuti

Ahead of 2019 general elections, Seun Kuti, son of Afro legend, Fela, has called out Nigerian parents over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Kuti, in a post on his Instagram page, lamented that a religious issue such as the hijab crisis that happened in Ibadan could cause outrage but the closure of universities for months has not yielded any protest by parents.

According to the singer, the parents should not be seen at the rallies when some of them have kids who are not in school.

Alongside an inscription that read “Your children aren’t attending school but you are attending political rally. Are you maaaaad? Kuti wrote: “Until we are ready to serve our children and not just raise them, we shall never understand national development.

“How hijab crisis in a secular school can create more outrage than the closure of our universities for months is the proof we need to know that we are willing to serve everything else, but our children.”

Recall that universities in Nigeria have been on strike since November 4, 2018 over failure of government to fulfil its promise in the 2009 agreement with ASUU.

Falz explains why he stopped going to church, shaved off beard

Falz

Popular Nigerian singer, Falz, has explained why he stopped going to church.

During the release of the much-anticipated album, ‘Moral Instruction,’ Falz’s mother complained about her son not attending church services.

Femi and Funmi Falana were present during their son’s ‘album listening party’.

During the event, his mother used the opportunity to express her concern about the fact that her son hardly goes to church.

Speak about his new album, Funmi said, “Folarin, you don’t go to church and I am bothered. I hope you would start going to church this year.”

The singer told Vanguard that his mother was right because he hardly went to church.

He said, “I have nothing against the church or going to church; everyone has the right to practise the religion they desire but personally, as a Christian, it has been a while that I have been to church. It does not make me less of a Christian.

“The most important thing is spirituality and your personal connection with God. The reason I haven’t attended a church service in a long while is because I went to a few churches and during sermons, I was put under undue pressure. There was a time that a pastor called me to the altar just to acknowledge my presence for being in church.

“In my mind, I felt that the service was not about me. I felt that everybody was there to worship God, yet they were putting undue pressure on me. The pastor gave me the microphone to address the congregation and I was puzzled; what did he expect me to say to the congregation? These are some of the issues.

“I just want to go to church and worship God like a regular member of the congregation. I do not want that kind of attention. I was hoping that I would go to church on a Sunday and it would not be like any other day I’m at a public place or doing a show,” the singer said.

On why he shaved off his beard, Falz added, “I did not shave my beard because of the album; it was just a coincidence. I was filming a project in relation to the album and I had to look a lot younger and that is why I shaved off my beard.

“I have been getting mixed reactions since I shaved my beard; some people tell me, ‘please, go and find our beard back’. I did not know that we owned the beard together. Other people told me that they love the new look and I am still a ‘sweet boy’ with or without the beard.”
