The Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha, representing Taraba South Senatorial District, says incompetent politicians are responsible for ethno-religious crisis in Nigeria.

Bwacha, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Wednesday in Abuja, said that 80 per cent of politicians got themselves elected into different political positions by whipping up ethnic and religious sentiments.

He urged electorates, particularly the people of Taraba to vote candidates on the basis of who they were to prevent weak politicians or leaders from using religion to score cheap political goals.

“I want to say clearly that this situation is not peculiar to Taraba state alone, it is a national problem.

“It is a national problem that is fueled by bad leadership because when people have a lot of inadequacies and they are suffering from complex, they often resort to either religion or ethnocentrism and geo-politics.

“And this thing will continue to play because a lot of people come to contest election not because they have the capacity but because they want to capitalise on tribe or religion as a tool to advance their political interest.

“Most of our politicians don’t have the capacity; they are hanging on to primordial sentiments and we will continue to suffer this problem until our eyes open.’’

He admonished citizens to realise that what the nation needed leaders that would put smile on the faces of the people not sentiment because poverty does not know tribe, religion or geopolitics.

The law maker also warned incompetent politicians to stop promoting religion politics because God cherished just and fair leader not religious bigots.

“There are unserious Muslims and unserious Christians and in the category of these unserious ones, they actually constitute the trouble makers.

“If a government is bad; it is bad there is no barrier; you either take it or live it, ” he said.

The deputy minority leader, however, advised electorate to learn how to assess people’s capacities to deliver, adding that God was not a religionist but a God of righteousness and holiness.”

“People who serve God are holy people; sin should not be seen in them but you will see an adulterer and a highly corrupt person talking about religion.

“Both Muslims and Christians meet together to steal the common wealth and later they will be talking about religion.

“Most of them are criminals and so this is the problem we have in this country and until people understand this how morally upright are that you are talking about religion.

” We have bunch of criminals all over the land destroying the country and many people have died because of misinformation by these selfish politicians.

“That is the unfortunate situation we found ourselves and it will take a great deal before it will end.”

He advised the people of Taraba to eschew violence and deemphasize primordial sentiment and religion politics to avoid division ahead of 2019 General Elections.

Onnoghen’s trial: YPP slams Buhari govt over ‘hypocrisy’ on CJN’s case

YPP

Young Progressives Party, YPP, has described call by the Federal Government for the resignation of Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as hypocritical.

In a statement on Saturday in Abuja, National Publicity Secretary of YPP, Mr. Olawale Egbeola, advised the presidency to allow the rule of law take its course without interference.

Egbeola said the rule of law remained one of the fundamental pillars of democracy and should not be subjected to intuition or the will of an individual or group, adding that anything short of this would be an invitation to anarchy.

He said: “The Young Progressives Party, YPP, strongly condemns any acts of corruption by any individual or group irrespective of ethnicity, religion, social status or gender, but is of the firm belief that the law is supreme and is the basis upon which the war against corruption should be fought and won.

“The recent allegation over declaration of assets against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, is sad, especially coming at a time we are about to go into a general election that will ultimately define the destiny of our great country.

“We also observe that the haste by the Federal Government in calling for the resignation of Justice Onnoghen is highly hypocritical, especially coming from a government renowned for overlooking allegations of corruption against cabinet members.

“This only goes to confirm the comment made by Senator Shehu Sani that the Presidency fights corruption using insecticides when it comes to the opposition, but apply deodorant when it comes to members of his cabinet.”

Egbeola noted that the APC-led government, “with an unacceptable reputation of flagrant disregard for the rule of law, should desist from arm twisting relevant agencies within its control.”

According to him, the Presidency should allow the wheel of justice to move smoothly without interference, “rather than the current desperation that is beginning to suggest to Nigerians a conspiracy to get rid of Justice Onnoghen by all means.

“While time is irrelevant in the fight against corruption, the verdict of whether he is guilty or not is exclusively the prerogative of a competent court of law and the Young Progressives Party is calling on the Federal Government to first allow the internal disciplinary processes of the National Judicial Council, NJC, which is a body saddled with the responsibility of taking disciplinary actions against erring judicial officers, to be completely exhausted.”

According to the monarch, the president has done well in the areas of infrastructure, anti-corruption, transport and economy.

He said the donation was to help facilitate movements during campaign for Buhari, who he said, deserved a second term in office.

Ezebuilo said that the president’s determination to ensure transparency in governance was commendable, and a path to securing a better future for the country.

The Igwe called for massive support for the President’s anti-corruption drive, stressing that alleged corrupt public officers had been prosecuted and billions of naira in stolen funds, recovered.

He said that the success of the whistle blower policy was laudable, stressing that a continuity in this direction would restore sanity in Nigeria.

Mr Mahmoud Mohammed, the Director of the Buhari/Osinbajo campaign office, who received the donation at the office in Abuja, commended the monarch and promised to ensure that the vehicle was used for its purpose.

2019 polls: Kaduna PDP raises alarm over destruction of Atiku’s billboards

Kaduna State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Deputy Campaign Coordinator, Comrade Danjuma Bello Sarki has condemned the destruction of its Presidential and Governorship candidate’s billboards by suspected thugs working for the APC.

Recall that suspected thugs destroyed campaign billboard meant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and its governorship candidate, Mallam Ashiru ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s arrival in Kaduna, Friday.

In a statement signed on Saturday, Bello blamed agents of the leading political party for the billboard destruction.

“It has come to our notice that the billboards and other mementos of our presidential candidate, His Excellency, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that of our governorship candidate, Hon. Isa Ashiru, mounted at strategic points in Kaduna metropolis and other local governments have either been vandalised, destroyed or completely removed by suspected agents of a leading political party in the state.

“We are not unaware of the fact that after our last gubernatorial campaign rally at the Trade Fair Complex in Kaduna, that some parties seeing the sea of heads that turned up has become jittery and desperate to save themselves from the glaring rejection by the people of the state.

“The resort to violence as shown by the pulling down of our billboards to give the false impression that there’s no opposition party in Kaduna State is one of ways the APC is trying to get over this shock but this is highly condemnable.

“We call on the security agencies to act quickly to save the state from brigandage and lawlessness.

“We call on our teeming supporters to keep the faith and not to lose hope as the journey to rescue the state from tyranny, oppression will soon be over,” he added.
