Ondo State

Ondo State Government says it has approved N1.5 billion for the take-off of a cancer treatment centre.

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo, said this at the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria’s 5th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference with the theme: “Mental Health Disorders in a Depressed Economy”.

According to him, the state government’s effort is also geared towards tackling mental depression by providing good healthcare services to citizens at affordable fees.

The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro noted that the centre would reduce the incidence of travelling abroad for cancer related treatment.

He said that the state government recently employed 15 additional medical consultants to boost provision of quality healthcare to citizens.

He urged medical personnel in the state to work assiduously for the sake of humanity and pledged to ensure prompt payment of workers’ salaries to alleviate the suffering of people.

The governor also said that a lot of empowerment programmes were on-going to get people engaged in meaningful economic activities, adding that government would continue to provide environment conducive for work.

Earlier, the Acting Chairman of MDCAN ODSGH, Dr Ishaq Ojodu, said the objective of the conference was to sensitise the public to the rising trend of mental disorders in the country.

“We want people to know that the situation is worst but they can develop coping mechanism to deal with depression.

”They don’t need to go to the extreme and use drugs that can damage their mental capabilities permanently but instead they should engage in social activities.

“We want families to be involved in creating support systems which have broken down in Nigeria.

“We also want to sensitise the government to its roles to provide health insurance that will afford citizens the quality health services they need,” he said.

The guest speaker, Dr Kolawole Mosaku, Head of Department of Mental Health, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, appealed to government to tackle mental depression through reduction of health inequalities.

Mosaku, who was represented by Dr Olukayode Aloba, of the Department of Mental Health, OAU, said that social security and protections should be guaranteed to all citizens.

According to him, youth employment and control of substance abuse must be cardinal targets of government.

He said that psychiatric care services must be available for easy access and welfare facilities provided for citizens who require it.

Mental Health

Meanwhile, as the world marks World Mental Health Day, the Chief Consultant Epidemiologist of Nigeria, Dr Godwin Ntadom, has called on parents and guardians to keep close tab on their wards to curb drug use and avert severe mental health disorders.

World Mental Health Day is observed annually on Oct. 10, with the overall objective of raising awareness on mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.

For its part, the global health organisation in a report to mark the day, titled ‘Coming of age: Adolescent health’, noted that half of all mental illnesses begin before the adolescent age of 14 but most cases go undetected and untreated.

According to WHO, depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents and suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 29 year-olds.

The harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs among adolescents is a major issue in many countries and can lead to self-destructive behaviour such as unsafe sex or dangerous driving.

Eating disorders are also of concern, the global health agency warned.
Dr Tarun Dua, mental health expert at WHO explained that half of mental health disorders arise before the age of 14.

“If these are left untreated, they extend into adult life, thus impacting educational attainment, employment, relationships or even parenting.”

“Evidence is growing that promoting and protecting adolescent mental health benefits not just adolescents’ health, in both short and the long term.

“It also promotes economies and society as a whole, with healthy young adults able to make greater contributions to the workforce, their families and communities.”

The organisation, therefore, called for investment and greater integration of mental health into broader health and social care systems worldwide.

Fire Service

And, the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service says it will engage over 600 public and private schools in the territory on fire safety best practices.

Julius Opetusin, Assistant Comptroller-General of the service said the campaign aimed to educate, equip and prepare students with basic knowledge of fire safety, hazards and prevention.

Opetusin said that the service aimed to achieve this through its collaboration with the Fire Fighters Magazine, FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and other joint partners.

“The students will also learn fire protection and equipment handling amongst others as a part of our corporate social responsibility as we embark on aggressive enforcement of the National Fire Safety Code in the FCT,’’ Opetusin said.

For his part, Minister of the FCT, Alhaji Muhammad Bello, said though such incidences were rare in the FCT, it was imperative to safeguard the lives of students and staff.

The Minister who was represented by Umar Shuaibu, an official of the FCT, said: “The fire service has decided to step in to bridge this gap with information gathering by establishing fire safety clubs in Nigerian schools.

“This will help their sister agencies to stem down carnage of kidnapping especially in soft spot areas like our educational institutions,” Bello said.

The minister assured Nigerians that his administration would work in line with the initiatives of this campaign to put fire safety measures in place in schools in the FCT.

“We will ensure that these plans will include details as regards fire alarm procedures, building floor plans, staff and students duties in case a of a fire emergency as well as exit drills.’’

Gov. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike

The General Overseer of Omega Power Ministries (OPM), Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere has declared that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has been ordained for a divine second term because of his projects delivery.

This is as Governor Wike stated that Christians must fully participate in the electoral process to determine the right leadership to transform the country.

They spoke at the OPM Worldwide Headquarters at Doctors Jesus City, Mbodo Aluu, Rivers State on Sunday.

Speaking at the Church Service, the General Overseer of OPM, Apostle Chinyere stated that Governor Wike has used his divine mandate to improve infrastructure across the state and deliver good governance to Rivers people.

He stated that his 2014 endorsement of the Rivers State Governor still subsists because it has not been withdrawn.

“The key to Government House which we divinely handed over to Governor Wike in 2014 before his first term is still in his pocket.

“Therefore, he will finish his second. I now hand over to Governor Wike the key to his second term. The governor will conclude his second term. Any plot against the governor’s second term will be scattered in Jesus Name “.

He said that the governor fulfilled his promise to the Church by releasing the land they acquired along the airport. He said that action has led to the expansion of OPM.

Apostle Chinyere stated that OPM will continue to support the State Government through investments in free education, rehabilitation of commercial sex and criminals .

“If all Churches operate free schools , crime will reduce. The government should enact a law that churches that fail to operate free schools should pay tax. We are also going to construct an All Girls Technical College”, he said.

In his remarks, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike stated that the refusal of Christians to use their voting strength has helped to enthrone poor leadership.

He said in 2019, Christians should effectively use their permanent voters cards to vote for credible leaders with the capacity to govern and improve the economy.

“You can only stop the emergence of a bad leader if you use your voters cards in the right direction. Don’t sit down and allow anybody to say they are more than you in number.

“When we are unconcerned and uninterested, bad leadership comes to the country”, he said.

Governor Wike agreed that his second term is secured because God has confirmed it through the voice of a leading cleric, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere.
“If the General Overseer has given me the key to Government House, nobody can receive the key. Even if they bring a crane or submarine, the key is secured.

“They are fighting themselves while I am moving ahead . God has placed a spirit of confusion in them”, he said.
Governor Wike noted that he will continue to partner with the Church to develop Rivers State. He noted that his political strength and presence flows from the support of the church.

The governor called on the Church to pray against violent elections in Rivers State, plans by INEC to manipulate the results and plans to use security agencies to manipulate polls.

2019 presidency:Akpabio reveals first state Buhari will win, says election will end within 3 hours

Published

on

A former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has declared that President Muhammadu Buhari will win the presidential election within three hours of voting.

The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State also claimed that the state would be first Buhari will win on February 16.

The lawmaker, who spoke in an interview with journalists in Uyo, was responding to a question on the possibility of violence in Akwa Ibom during the election following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

According to him, the people of the state have already decided who they will vote, insisting that there is no battle ground in the state.

Akpabio said, “APC had taken over Akwa Ibom even before I joined the party. By the time I decided to join APC, by the time I landed at the airport, the whole airport was APC.

“The whole of the airport to the town was APC. The whole of the plaza in Uyo was APC, the jubilation was infectious.

“Women and men were bringing their brooms from under their bed, which means they had been hiding them because of me and they were sweeping the roads.

“A distance of 20 minutes took us over two hours to cover because of the jubilation. I was now saying that so all these people belong to APC.

“When I asked them, they said, “Sir, after you left office, the situation wasn’t the same again. We have moved to APC”. And I asked them when, and they said since 2015.

“If you ask the APC headquarters, they will tell you that we have over 300,000 card-carrying members who joined the party within six weeks.

“When I hear that Akwa Ibom is going to be a battle-ground, I laugh because there is no battle-ground in a state that has already shown direction.

“I can confidently confirm to you that the first state President Buhari will win within three hours of voting is Akwa Ibom.

“It is not because of me but because of the change that the Federal Government has started. The reason I am being attacked is just because I am a leader here and a lot of people came out boldly to associate with APC when I joined, but the people have rejected PDP before I declared for APC.”

By Augustine Aminu

Ahead of the 2019 general elections, an international based None Governmental Organization, Global Peace Movement International (GPMI), have thrown their weight behind Sen. Godswill Akpabio’s re-election bid.

Dr. Mike Uyi, President General of the organization, in an interview with newsmen in Lagos described Governor Akpabio as an icon of democracy and a good example of what leadership should represent in Nigeria and Africa at large.

He said their support for Senator Akpabio was not unconnected with his landmark achievements in this democratic dispensation.

“Available and verifiable facts singled out Senator Akpabio as a pride of Africa, worthy of emulation”.

Dr. Uyi further stated that Senator Akpabio’s achievements in the areas of human capital development; infrastructure and quality legislation remains a reference point among lawmakers in Nigeria.

“It is on record that this Icon of democracy during his time as the Executive Governor of Akwa-Ibom State introduced free, compulsory and qualitative education policy; free medical care for pregnant women, children and the aged; and the massive infrastructural investment”, Dr. Uyi emphasized.

“We decided to throw our weight behind a man who has what it takes to represent his people and that is why we are supporting Senator Akpabio.”

“He has good track record as a politician who means well for the common man in the village. Not the politicians who are afraid to stay among their people in their immediate environment. Senator Akpabio is a grassroots man who knows the needs of the masses, and shares the little he has with them”.
